Target is no longer a general public access retailer for Pokemon. Pokemon is only available for online purchase FOR MEMBERS ONLY and those people must have been members since May last year. New members will not be eligible to buy Pokemon for 1 year after becoming a member.
What this means:
This is simply unprecedented. Retailers are getting sick of Pokemon scalpers, campers, and all the liability of a high markup environment. This is a temporary attempt at artificially reducing demand. This will become a market wide strategy (maybe even endorsed by Pokemon) until the large new NA printing campus is operational in Q3 2027.
In 2021 Pokemon saw a severe demand increase. The Pokemon company answered by increasing sales channels (Vending Machines, expanding retailers, and developing new SKUs). In 2025 another demand increase happened. Pokemon addressed this spike differently. They are investing in 1 million square feet of manufacturing.
This is a permanent investment and shows the commitment pokemon is making to the TCG. Billion dollar companies don’t double manufacturing space without serious market research.
Overall, this means that Pokemon itself is bullish on TCG. But the current supply chain is a single good set away from totally fracturing. Target and other retailers will continue to try to suppress demand by making it harder and harder to buy product over the next 18 months.
