James Allen wrote something in 1903 that I still think about constantly:
"A man's mind may be likened to a garden, which may be intelligently cultivated or allowed to run wild."
Most of us are letting it run wild.
We don't choose our first thought in the morning — the phone does. We don't choose what we ruminate on at 2am — the anxiety does. We don't choose the narrative we replay about ourselves — the past does.
Here's what I've learned: an unchosen thought is still a choice. When you don't redirect it, you're choosing to let it grow.
The Pause on Purpose System starts here — with the pause to think. Not positive thinking. Not toxic positivity. Intentional thinking. The deliberate act of asking: "Is this thought true? Is it helpful? What would I tell a friend who believed this about themselves?"
That's gardening. That's agency coming back online.
Your challenge today: Catch ONE thought before noon that you didn't consciously choose. Write it down. Then ask: is this a weed or a seed?
