what you need to use thinkorswim®
What you need to use thinkorswim with Schwab
You need:
- A Schwab brokerage account (this is the “account that holds your money and investments”).
- A Schwab login ID + password (you’ll use the same login to sign into thinkorswim).
- A way to fund the account (typically link a bank for transfers; you can also fund other ways depending on Schwab).
- If you want to trade options, futures, or forex, you may need to request/qualify for those trading permissions (Schwab will show you the prompts inside your account). (Permissions vary by product.)
Step-by-step: set up Schwab so you can use thinkorswim (layman terms)
Step 1) Go to Schwab.com and open your brokerage account - Go to Schwab.com
- Click Open an account (choose the account type that fits you, most people pick an Individual Brokerage to start).
- Fill in the application (basic identity + contact info).
- Create your Schwab Login ID and password (save these—this is what you’ll use for thinkorswim too).
- Submit the application. Schwab may ask for identity verification.
Step 2) Fund the account (so you can actually trade)
- Once your account is open, connect your bank and transfer money in (or use other funding methods Schwab provides).
- You can explore thinkorswim without trading by using paper trading (practice), but live trading requires real funds + any needed approvals.
