AFTER SETTING UP SCHWAB YOU NEED "THINK OR SWIM"
what you need to use thinkorswim®
What you need to use thinkorswim with Schwab
You need:
  1. A Schwab brokerage account (this is the “account that holds your money and investments”).
  2. A Schwab login ID + password (you’ll use the same login to sign into thinkorswim).
  3. A way to fund the account (typically link a bank for transfers; you can also fund other ways depending on Schwab).
  4. If you want to trade options, futures, or forex, you may need to request/qualify for those trading permissions (Schwab will show you the prompts inside your account). (Permissions vary by product.)
Step-by-step: set up Schwab so you can use thinkorswim (layman terms)
Step 1) Go to Schwab.com and open your brokerage account
  1. Go to Schwab.com
  2. Click Open an account (choose the account type that fits you, most people pick an Individual Brokerage to start).
  3. Fill in the application (basic identity + contact info).
  4. Create your Schwab Login ID and password (save these—this is what you’ll use for thinkorswim too).
  5. Submit the application. Schwab may ask for identity verification.
Step 2) Fund the account (so you can actually trade)
  • Once your account is open, connect your bank and transfer money in (or use other funding methods Schwab provides).
  • You can explore thinkorswim without trading by using paper trading (practice), but live trading requires real funds + any needed approvals.
Step-by-step: get thinkorswim on Desktop, Mobile, and Web
