It’s great to see so many people stepping up and wanting to learn. The oil and gas industry can be incredibly rewarding for those who are willing to go after it and put themselves out in front.
Step one is the basics — how qualified are you, really? Take a moment to stop and think about what you’ve done to make yourself stand out. If the answer is “not much,” that’s okay — now is the time to start.
The good news is that many training courses are government-funded, meaning you can get qualified for little to no cost. Fast, one-day courses I highly recommend include First Aid, CPR, Working at Heights, Confined Space, Breathing Apparatus (BA), and Gas Testing. Which can be found in Australia at places like AWCC in Brisbane who offer a Rig ready course which covers most of these and even a certificate 2 in oil and gas onshore.
While not essential, 4WD training and a truck licence can also give you an edge, especially if you’re aiming to start onshore in the oil and gas industry. (highly recommend working onshore to build your knowledge and experience before even attempting to apply to work offshore)
