The 3 Things College Coaches Evaluate Before Talent Ever Matters
Most athletes believe college coaches recruit talent first.
That’s only partially true.
Before talent ever matters, coaches evaluate three invisible traits that decide whether you get trusted, played, and kept.
1️⃣ Availability
Can you be counted on… every day?
Coaches don’t just ask:
“Are you good?”
They ask:
“Will this kid show up on time, healthy, and prepared consistently?”
Availability =
  • Showing up early
  • Taking care of your body
  • Managing school so it doesn’t interfere with football
The best ability is still availability.
2️⃣ Coachability
How fast do you respond to correction?
Coaches notice:
  • Body language when you’re coached
  • Whether you argue or adjust
  • How quickly mistakes are fixed
The athletes who play early aren’t perfect — they’re teachable.
If a coach corrects you once and the mistake shows up again, your trust score drops.
3️⃣ Reliability
Do your actions match your words?
This is the separator.
Reliable athletes:
  • Do what they say they’ll do
  • Prepare without being reminded
  • Handle responsibilities off the field
Talent gets you noticed. Reliability gets you kept.
The Truth Most Athletes Miss
College football isn’t about being the best player.
It’s about becoming the lowest risk player a coach can trust.
That’s how freshmen play early.
That’s how athletes earn leadership roles.
That’s how careers last.
Action Challenge (Do This This Week)
Ask yourself honestly:
  • Am I available every day?
  • Do I respond well to coaching?
  • Do my actions match my words?
Pick one area to improve this week and attack it.
