Dear Directors,

Let’s be honest - being a state director can sometimes feel like navigating in the dark without a map.

You step into the role, keen to make a difference, but figuring out what’s expected, where to get information, and how to best support your members isn’t always straightforward.

That’s why we’re launching this monthly update [NAME OF PAPER], to keep you informed, connected, and equipped with the tools you need to succeed. More importantly, it’s about giving you a stronger voice - ensuring your insights, concerns, and ideas shape the conversation at both the state and national levels. This isn’t just another newsletter - it’s your platform to drive change, collaborate, and make sure our profession moves forward together.

Welcome to our first ever (and hopefully not last!) update for state directors - a place where we can share insights, updates, and resources to better support each other and the surveyor community.

Think of this as your friendly neighbourhood newsletter, minus the boring bits. You get to know first.

We’re kicking off this initiative to bring more structure to our communications, so directors have the tools they need to succeed - and maybe even have a bit of fun along the way (no promises, though).

Project Lighthouse 💡– A Shiny New Way to Communicate

A select group of five directors has been enlisted (don’t worry, they volunteered… mostly) to help shape and improve our communications. We’re calling this initiative Project Lighthouse - because every great operation needs a mysterious-sounding name, right? While we’re still ironing out the details, the goal is clear: better engagement, useful resources, and making sure directors don’t feel like they’ve been thrown into the deep end without a life raft.

What’s on Our Radar?

Over the past few weeks, the Project Lighthouse crew has thrown some solid ideas into the mix. Here’s what we’ll be working on:

✅ Director Engagement & Communication – Monthly Town Hall meetings where we can actually see each other’s faces (and not just in email threads). Bring your best Zoom background (because they will mostly be online) - the first one is 27th March

✅ Member Value & ROI – Answering the million-dollar question: Why should I be a member? Spoiler: It’s about more than just tire discounts.

✅ Program Promotion & Implementation – Finding better ways to support state efforts in CST, TrigStar, and Certified Floodplain Surveyor programs (because acronyms are fun, right?).

✅ Government Affairs Updates – Keeping you informed on what’s happening at the legislative level, so you can sound extra knowledgeable at your next meeting.

✅ Onboarding for New Directors – A survival guide for new directors so they don’t have to figure everything out the hard way (because we’ve all been there).

✅ Member Engagement & Resources – Making the NSPS website the go-to place for surveyors looking for answers, instead of the fifth page of a Google search.

✅ Strengthening Community & Outreach – Encouraging diversity and inclusion with targeted programs - because surveying should be for everyone, and we need fresh faces in the industry.

Next Steps – How You Can Get Involved (Yes, You!)

📅 Town Hall – 27th March – Let’s have a chat, set the direction for this effort, and make sure we’re all on the same page (or at least the same book).

📚 Resource Development – We’ll start working on FAQs, brochures, and updates that you can share with your members - so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel.

💡 Feedback & Suggestions – This newsletter will evolve based on your input, so let us know what works, what doesn’t, and what we should add (or remove if it's just fluff).
