Introduction to Flashlights and Strobes Favored by Instructors
Taking usable macro photos with your TG camera almost always requires some kind of external light. If you're aiming for a lightweight setup, a flashlight with at least 1000 lumens (though 1500 lumens is recommended) can be sufficient. With enough practice and dedication, you can capture certain types of photos quite well with just a flashlight!
However, depending on your subject and the water conditions, flashlights can be limiting. For instance, you might struggle to get enough light while maintaining a good depth of field, or your photos might turn out blurry.
This is where strobes come in!
Why Choose a Strobe?
A strobe provides more than enough light for most underwater photography subjects.
Different strobes offer varying levels of light output strength. For example, smaller strobes might not illuminate as far as larger, more powerful strobes. (Even the most powerful strobes typically only reach about 1–2 meters underwater.)
For macro photography, this limited range doesn’t affect close-up shots much. However, if you plan to use your strobe for wide-angle photography or fish portraits, a larger, more powerful strobe might be the better option.
My Equipment Setup
Here’s what I use for my underwater photography:
- Two Strobes:
- Alternative Setup for Creative Shots:
I switch between these setups depending on the subject and conditions to get the best results!
Things to Consider When Choosing a Strobe
- Size and Features: Compact strobes are lightweight and easy to manage. However, they typically support only TTL (automatic) shooting, while larger strobes often include both TTL and manual shooting modes. Some strobes also have built-in focus lights, which help simplify your setup by reducing the need for extra equipment.
Creative Freedom:A strobe allows you to push your camera to its limits. For example, you can use a narrow aperture (e.g., F9–F18) for a wider depth of field while maintaining a fast shutter speed to minimize blur.
