NEXT STEP COMMUNITY SKILLS
Executive Summary
Unlocking hidden potential through early intervention, community engagement, and progression into skills, training, and employmentStoke-on-Trent & Staffordshire
The Opportunity
Next Step Community Skills Hub is a community-based early-intervention model designed to support adults who are currently disconnected from education, training, and employment. Across Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire and UK as a whole; many individuals remain excluded from opportunity not because they lack potential, but because they are not yet ready to engage with formal support systems.
Low confidence, social isolation, negative past experiences, and multiple barriers often prevent adults from accessing the pathways already available. The result is long-term disengagement, lost potential, and increased social and economic pressure on communities and services.
The Gap We Address
There are strong skills and employability programmes in place across the region. However, many are best suited to people who are already prepared to take the next step.
The missing piece is a trusted first-stage intervention that helps people build confidence, readiness, and stability before progressing into mainstream provision.
Next Step Community Skills Hub fills that gap.
Our Solution
We provide a community-based gateway that meets people where they are and helps them move forward.
Our model combines:
  • A physical hub offering a safe, welcoming, and consistent space for support
  • Mobile outreach to engage adults who would not otherwise access services
  • Structured progression support focused on confidence, life skills, employability, and onward pathways
We do not duplicate existing services. We strengthen them by helping more people become ready to access them successfully.
Who We Support
We focus on adults who are often underserved or overlooked, including:
  • Long-term unemployed adults
  • Adults excluded from education or training
  • Individuals with low confidence or low readiness to engage
  • People experiencing isolation or multiple barriers to progression
This is a high-need group, but also a high-potential group. With the right support, meaningful and lasting progression is possible.
Expected Impact: First 6 Months
  • 100+ adults engaged
  • 40+ progressed into training or formal learning
  • 20+ progressed into employment or volunteering
Wider Outcomes
  • Increased confidence and motivation
  • Improved engagement with local support systems
  • Stronger progression into skills and employment pathways
  • Long-term social and economic value for communities and partners
