This is a story about an unspoken force - a force that not many speak of.
It is the power of DECIDING and committing to a goal, when combined with the bold genius of acting as if it will happen. By acting as if, you are making your decision right. By acting as if, you are demonstrating to the universe your commitment to your DECISION, that your goal WILL be realized, not because it’s a goal, but because you have DECIDED that it’s actually going to happen.
The story begins with a woman who love, love, loved the saxophone...playing the saxophone. It made her feel alive...like it was her oxygen.
But she had gone years without her saxophone. It had been taken away years ago. Years without this joy and feeling of aliveness that came with playing the saxophone.
One day she caught herself admitting to herself that not only did she want a saxophone, but in a moment of bold knowing, she DECIDED that she would have her very own tenor saxophone.
She didn’t know how she would get one, but she was committed to making it happen.
So she applied for a scholarship that gave grants to musicians in hopes of winning the money to buy the saxophone. And she was awarded the scholarship! She was elated to receive the scholarship money. But now she had to find a tenor saxophone to buy.
She didn’t know where to get a saxophone, especially a used one. She realized it would take a couple weeks, even if she acted quickly before she would have her hands on her saxophone. And then it would need to be taken into the music shop to be refurbished and brought into working order.
So actually, it would really be about a month before she could PLAY her new saxophone.
And here’s where she tapped into that unspoken force of acting as if.
A mentor challenged her to contact a saxophone teacher immediately and schedule a lesson for the earliest possible date - ideally in the next 2 weeks.
She was confused. “But I don’t even have a saxophone yet. How can I schedule a lesson if I don’t even have my own saxophone yet?”, she said.
But her mentor was steadfast. “Do it now. Call the teacher immediately and schedule your lesson. By doing so, you are ACTING AS IF you really meant it when you DECIDED that you would play the saxophone again.”
She didn’t quite understand but agreed and went ahead and called the saxophone teacher and scheduled her lesson. It was 12 days away.
“I did it”, she told her mentor. “My saxophone lesson is scheduled for March 13th.”
“Excellent!”, he said. “Good job! Now comes the important part. It is extremely important that you keep your radar on for any kind of miracle or opportunity to show up. It almost always happens when one makes a real not kidding DECISION. And it most definitely ALWAYS happens when you act as if, like you did booking your first lesson without a saxophone. And when the day comes, I’d be happy to give you a ride to your 1st lesson! You can use my tenor saxophone for your first lesson.”
She was so thrilled and grateful, and quite a bit nervous.
March 13th arrived and it was time for her first saxophone lesson. On the way to her lesson her mentor advised her, “Now remember what I told you. It is extremely important that you keep your radar on and be aware for any kind of miracle or opportunity to show up. Because you acted as if - miracles and special opportunities will show up. Your job is to notice them and take advantage of them and accept them…to make them right for showing up.”
She nodded her head and went in to have her lesson. Her new teacher was super kind, and really good at teaching the saxophone - a true master. He was even funny too. He even gave her one of his mouthpieces to use for the lesson.
“Hmm” she wondered. “Is him lending me his mouthpiece for me to use - is that one of those miracles my mentor was talking about?” She wasn’t sure.
The lesson went incredibly well. She and her teacher hit it off right from the start - a great fit. And she even made progress during her very first lesson - she actually got better during the lesson! She was ecstatic.
When the lesson was rapping up, she scheduled her next lesson and then her teacher said something she would never forget. “Here take my tenor sax home with you so you can practice. I won’t need that horn until my next gig in 2 weeks.” He reached behind him and grabbed his very own tenor saxophone (the one he used to make a living) and handed it to her.
“Just bring that back with you to our next lesson.”
She was stunned. She couldn’t speak.
She had scheduled her lesson without even having a saxophone. And now she was being given a professional musician’s tenor sax to take home with her to practice with. This was a professional’s horn, a $10,000 sax, a thing of beauty, a horn he had invested in and taken care of and relied on to make his living. And it even came in a gorgeous expensive travel case which she ogled. She took it from him as if it was made of solid gold.
As her mentor drove her home and the truck was pulling into her driveway she exclaimed, “OMG I’m shaking. I can’t believe I’m actually bringing a real tenor sax INTO MY HOUSE! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!” she yelled as she ran into her house carrying the saxophone.
