It is important to realize that an emotion should not be considered a weakness. Emotions provide feedback about your current status. The way you relate to and deal with the emotion can be considered a weakness, but the emotion itself is not. Emotions simply provide the you with “data”.

Every goal you set for yourself has multiple pathways. If you're trying to lose weight or start a business, there are a hundred different ways to do it. While it's important to focus on the process, don't get caught up in the "how" too much. Once you start taking action, you'll figure things out along the way. If you're persistent, eventually, you'll reach your destination.

Whatever your goal is, ideally you want to create a consistent action (habit) or lifestyle that supports the outcome you desire. For example, if you want to lose weight, the goal isn't to lose 15 pounds (end-state goal), the goal is to eat healthy and exercise daily (process goal). When you turn your actions into the goal itself, that's when you start to build better habits and see lasting change.

Enlightened Self-interest. The idea of “self-interest” is a fascinating subject to study. All of us have self-interest. The key is for it to be enlightened - where everybody wins, and nobody loses. Our first interest is to survive. What does it take to survive? Our second interest is to succeed. What does it take to succeed? What does it take for me personally to survive and to succeed? Can I legitimately be interested enough in the things that help me both succeed and survive? Here's what I discovered: The answer is yes. It's possible to exercise self-interest, but to do so in a way that no one loses, and everyone benefits. Life was not designed to give us what we need. Life was designed to give us what we deserve. We did not reap the harvest in the fall because we needed it. We reaped the harvest in the fall because we deserved it. Not necessarily from a moral standpoint (although there are some moral laws as well), but from the basic laws of life that simply say, “If you wish to reap, you must plant”. Reaping is reserved for the planters. The reason why they reap is that they deserve it. They're the planters, so of course, they deserve to reap the rewards. We don’t get what we need, we get what we deserve. You can't walk out to the fields and say, “Hey ground! I need some corn!” Here's what the field would say, “Who is this clown? That brings me this need, and brings me no seed?” Take your seed to the marketplace, not your need. Don't disclose your need to the marketplace, only your willingness, because the marketplace is not interested in your needs, but they are interested in your seed. They're interested in your willingness to work. They're interested in your disciplines, your eagerness, your vitality and your work ethic. That's what the marketplace is interested in. Not your need, but your seed. You get what you deserve. Now, let's talk about “enlightened self-interest” for a moment. If you wish to receive, that’s self-interest. But if it's enlightened self-interest, you understand that in order to receive, you must give. Receiving is reserved for those who give.
