“I just want to be more consistent.”
Closely followed by:
“I need to be more confident.”
I coached a golfer who started around a 19–20 handicap and wanted to get his scores from the mid-90s towards the low 80s.
We did some technical work, but we didn't completely rebuild his swing.
Instead, we started building evidence.
We measured his normal carry distances, dispersion, shot patterns and misses. He gradually knew what his golf ball was actually going to do rather than what he hoped it would do.
Over roughly 10 months, he got down to a 7 handicap.
One thing I said to him has stuck with me:
Confidence isn't a feeling. It's a byproduct of evidence.
So here's something I'd like you to try this week.
Pick one club and hit 20–30 shots. Don't change your swing. Just observe.
What's your average carry?
What's your normal direction?
What's your most common miss?
How wide is your dispersion?
Then come back here and post what you discovered.
Don't fix anything yet. Just collect the evidence.
