How Did your Aromatic Journey Begin?
For me, I was always an odd kid growing up with a very active imagination. I would be outside hiding amongst various conifers and other wild shrubs pretending I was a Witch, communing with the spirits of nature, etc. I would pick some rose petals, basil, and other aromatic plants to make my own potions.
When I would be around my grandmother, we would harvest dandelion greens to make a delicious and simply greek stew called horta, a combination of leek, garlic cooked until softened, then add in your harvested and washed dandelion greens, water, salt, and cook until the dandelions greens are softened. Serve with freshly cracked pepper and either lemon juice or white vinegar.
We would harvest fresh oregano, tie them together to hang, and when they were dried, lay down a large clean piece of fabric so we could sit on it whilst rubbing said oregano bundle with our hands to remove the oregano from the stems to be jarred later, etc.
This witchy aspect of my childhood was only further inspired by my Godmother, who was into Feng Shui, Crystals, etc.
When I reached the age of 12 years old, a magazine subscription came to Australia from the U.K which changed my life. In the early 2000's, I was at my Godmother's house when she showed me this beautiful cardbox box, which had in it incense, tarot cards, crystals, and these small bottles of beautiful smelling oils which I later learned were called Essential Oils.
This box was part of a Magazine subscription which has 1 issue released every week at my local news agency with select articles, information, lessons, and items such as a tarot card, a bottle of essential oil, a crystal, etc.
Of course, I am talking about the series known then as Enhancing Your Mind, Body, Spirit.
I ended up collecting the entire subscription and fell in love with the aromatherapy side of things.
It was through this subscription that my journey to Aromatherapy started, or at least, the first time I came across the word Aromatherapy and bottles of aromatic oils.
What made me want to become a practitoner though, came years later.
In my early 20's, I would suffer from really bad hiccuping fits where I would release a hiccup every 3 seconds non-stop for hours, sometimes even 2 days straight.
There was no stopping the hiccups, I couldn't even go to sleep because the hiccups would convulse my chest. There were times where I was awake for 16 hours plus because I could not rest/sleep due to them.
I spoke to my then General Practitioner (Family Doctor or GP in Australia), changed my diet, was taking various pharmaceuticals, but nothing worked. I would have these hiccuping episodes on and off for about a year.
Eventually, as a last resort, I had an aromatherapy consult, or more accurately, an aromatic medicine consult (internal use of essential oils).
The Practitioner made me, I guess we can call it a pastille, and showed me how to make it myself. I would mix Ginger and Peppermint essential oil, 6 drops each, with 60g of thick local honey.
I would then take 1 teaspoon of this honey and mix it with slippery elm powder until it formed a solid sphere. I would continue to do this until I had 12 spheres.
Whenever I had this case of hiccups, I would suck on one of the balls until it dissolved. 1 ball is roughly 1 drop of essential oil, which equals 50mg, a low dose for internal use.
I found that after sucking on just 1 ball, the hiccups would immediately stop, something that never happened before.
I took a second sphere later that night for a total daily dose of 100mg.
Since I did this, I have never had these recurring consistent hiccups ever again. This powerful yet simple remedy showed me the power of essential oils, and I immediately wanted to become an Aromatherapy Practitioner.
I started learning via books by noted Aromatherapists - Tisserand, Price, Battaglia, Worwood, Wildwood, Lawless, Karen Downes & Judith White, Davies, etc.
I ended up signing up for a Level 1 & 2 Certification with Aromahead Institute, as the course they offered for certification, ACP, is recognised by not only NAHA, but also IFPA, IICT, and the AIA.
So far, on my aromatic journey, I have never regretted starting this path and ever increasing my knowledge of this beautiful modality.
