I have had some people message me about how they have tried out and enjoyed my two deodorant recipes listed here:
I thought I would share my Temperature Stable SOLID deodorant recipe.
What do I mean by Temperatrure stable.
Often in Natural Deoforant formulations, raw coconut oil is used.
The problem with using raw coconut oil is that it has a low melting point of just 24°C, causing natural deodorants that use it, to liquefy in the summer and freeze solid in the winter. Of course, depending on temperature, it may not become very liquidly but it could become too soft or too hard that it over-applies products or under-applies product
To create a completely temperature-stable stick that stays the same texture year-round, you need a liquid oil that never solidifies, balanced by a stable botanical wax.
A commercial trade secret is to get the texture of commercial natural deodorant solid sticks, the combination of castor oil and cendelilla wax is used. Castor oil is thick, stable, and highly substantive. Candelilla wax has a much higher melting point (70°C) than beeswax (63°C), meaning the stick will not melt even if left in a hot car whilst also making this product 100% vegan.
Meadowfoam seed oil is incredibly stable, deeply hydrating, and highly resistant to rancidity, while castor oil adds a rich, protective barrier and a smooth glide.
The addition of Vitamin E (Tocopherol) to this formulation will prevent the natural oils and shea butter from oxidizing (turning rancid) when exposed to air and heat, significantly extending your deodorant's shelf life.
Preservatives are not needed for this formulation as it is an anhydrous formula.
The Formulation:
Once again I have given the percentages of ingredients used for this formulation so you can easily scale ingredients up or down. Next to the percentages I have given grams so if you want to quickly make this product easily, just use the grams and you will get 100g of final product.

- 1.00% (1g) Vitamin E (Tocopherol) is our antioxidant to prevent or slow down rancidity of the lipids.
- 2.00% (2g or between 40 to 60 drops) Essential Oil Synergy for both fragrance and anti-bacterial.
Here are two synergies I have put together than can be used for this deodorant one which is more 'feminine' in aroma and the other more 'masculine.'
All essential oils are antibacterial and are balanced aroamtically with a top, middle and base note.
Each Synergy consits of 30% Top Notes, 40% Middle (heart) Notes and 30% Base Notes.
🌹Citrus Rose & Earth (Femiminene blend) 🌹:
Opens with sparkling citrus, transitions into a soothing herbal-rose heart, and settles into a warm, luxurious, resinous base.

- 20% (0.40g or 12 drops) Organic Lavender English (Lavandula angustifolia) e.o is our Middle Note.
- 20% (0.40g or 8 drops) Organic Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) e.o is our Middle Note
- 30% (0.60g or 12 drops) Organic Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) e.o is our Base Note.
Crisp Mint & Smoked Wood (Masculine) blend:
Opens with a piercing, energising burst of forest air, moves into a clean, warm-spicy heart, and cures into a deep, sophisticated, masculine woody aroma.
- 30% (0.60g or 18 drops) Narrow-Leaved Peppermint (Eucalyptus radiata) e.o is our Top Note.
- 20% (0.40g or 10 drops) Black Pepper (Piper nigrum) e.o is our Middle Note.
- 20% (0.40g or 12 drops) Lavender English (Lavandula angustifolia) e.o is our Middle Note.
- 20% (0.40g or 8 drops) Cedarwood Atlas (Cedrus atlantica) e.o is our Base Note
- 10% (0.20g or 3 drops) Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) e.o is our Base Note.
Its a good idea to mix the synergies first into a glass amber bottle and allow them to 'synergize' or get to know one another for 24 hours or even better 2-3 days before making the deodorant.
Why I chose these essential oils:
🌹Citrus Rose & Earth (Femiminene blend) 🌹:
- Shelf Life (from date of distillation): 2 years.
- Perfumery Note: Top Note
- Volatility: Fast (Evaporates within 1–2 hours)
- Aromatic Character: Juicy, radiant, sweet, and uplifting.
- Role in Deodorant: It provides the immediate "first impression" burst of crisp freshness when you first apply the deodorant or when your body temperature rises and you begin to warm up.
- Safety & Contraindications: Sweet Orange is NOT phototoxic. Avoid Oxidized or old oils. Possible skin irritant if oxidized.
- Shelf Life (from date of distillation): 6 years.
- Perfumery Note: Top-to-Middle Note (Bridge Note)
- Volatility: Medium-Fast (Evaporates within 2–3 hours)
- Aromatic Character: Herbaceous, clean, floral, and slightly camphorous.
- Role in Deodorant: Lavender acts as a bridge. It seamlessly tethers the sharp, fleeting sweetness of the orange to the heavier floral heart notes.
- Safety & Contraindications: I consider this to be a 100% safe essential oil to use though some aromatherapists calim Lavender has contraindications, though I could not find any evidence-based reasoning for these contraindications based on the chemistry of Lavandula angustifolia.
Having said that though, these are the safety and contraindications given by some Aromatherapists though very unlikely to occur via topical axillary application.
- Don't used during any stage of pregnancy if there has been a histroy or miscarriage or breakthrough bleeding, otherwsise not during the first trimester. (I believe this statement is due to sources confusing Lavandula angustifolia with Lavandula latifolia because evidence supporting this statement typically highlight camphor which is high in Spike Lavender but very low usually under 1% in Lavender English.)
- Don't use if you have blood pressure or taking blood pressure lowering (antihypertensives) medication as it can lower it further.
(I disagree with this as the studies on this indicate that the blood pressure lowering abilities of Lavender english is mainly due to psychological relaxation/stress reduction rather than a chemical manipulation or interaction with blood vessels.
The BP lowering effects are also temporary or significant enough to be of concern. Having said that, if taking any relaxing essential oil alongside antihypertensive medicatioons, you can trigger mild temporary symptoms of dizziness, lightheadedmess or feeling faint. )
- Not to be used if undergoing cancer treatment.
(This concern stemmed from some labratory studies where it was suggested that lavender oil exhibited weak estrogencic and antiandrogenic (estreogen mimicking and testosterone blocking) activity and therefore lavender should be avoided if undergoing treatment for patients with hormone-dependent malignancies, such as estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer or prostate cancer.
- Not to be used if taking preparatons containing Iodine or iron.
(This claim does not apply to Lavender essential oil but rather to lavender tea, tincture or oral supplements. When the tannins and polyphenols found in the lavender plant are consumed alongside iron supplements or iron-rich foods, the tannins bind tightly to non-heme iron in the digestive tract. This chemical bond forms an insoluble complex that the body cannot absorb. Over time with continuous use of lavender internally concurrently with iron, can hinder the treatment of iron-deficincy-anemeia.
There are NO tannins or polyphenols in Lavender essential oil so this does not apply to Aromatherapy.
As far as Iodine preparations are concerned, this is based on old herbal texts which claimed that Lavender is a a mild goitrogen. Goitrogens are naturally occurring substances that can interfere with the way your thyroid gland utilizes iodine to produce crucial hormones. However there is NO scientific evidence which supports Lavender as being a Goitrogen or even interacting with iodine.
So this too does not apply to Aromatherapy, not even to Herbalism.
- Shelf Life (from date of distillation): 5 years.
- Perfumery Note: Middle (Heart) Note
- Volatility: Medium (Lasts 3–5 hours)
- Aromatic Character: Rich, green, rosy, slightly minty, and intensely floral.
- Role in Deodorant: This is the core character of the fragrance. Long after the orange has faded, Geranium remains on the skin, providing a luxury, high-end "spa-like" floral aroma that actively masks body odour.
- Safety & Contraindications: May cause skin sensitivity/irritation in some if oil is oxidized or old.
This is considered a very safe essential oil though some Aromatherapists and older aromatherapy texts give the following safety & contraindication advise:
- Not to be used if pregnant, breastfeeding or on babies and children.
(This is based on old aromatherapy texts which have been debunked. Traditional Aromatherapy textbooks linked Geranium to emmenagogue properties (the ability to stimulate menstrual flow), leading to fears it could trigger a miscarriage or early labor.
However, modern in-vitro scientific studies show no activity on human uterine muscle at normal exposures.)
- Not to be used by people on blood thinning medications such as warfarin.
(This specific contraindication is a classic example of botanical identity confusion rather than clinical evidence against Geranium essential oil. In herbal medicine, certain species of wild cranesbill (which belong to the Geranium genus, but are completely different plants from the Pelargonium species used to make the essential oil) contain high amounts of tannins and vitamin K compounds that interact with blood clotting.
Because early literature poorly distinguished between the herbal extract of a wild Geranium and the steam-distilled essential oil of a Pelargonium, the warning against mixing it with anticoagulants like Warfarin was copied into modern aromatherapy text books. Extracted via steam distillation, Geranium essential oil contains no vitamin K, coumarins, or compounds that alter blood coagulation cascades. It does not chemically interact with Warfarin when applied to the skin in low cosmetic percentages.)
- Not to be used if undertaking treatment for cancer.
(There is no actual clinical or scientific evidence to support this statement, but rather a theoretical safety reasoning. The warning to avoid Geranium oil during cancer treatments is not because the oil is carcinogenic, but rather due to metabolic interference and skin vulnerability.
Many chemotherapy drugs are metabolized in the liver via the Cytochrome P450 enzyme pathway. In-vitro chemical profiling has shown that some essential oil constituents, including geraniol, can temporarily inhibit or alter these exact liver enzymes. If a patient absorbs significant amounts of the oil topically or orally, it could theoretically change how fast the body processes chemotherapy, making the cancer medication either less effective or dangerously toxic.
Because Geranium is traditionally labeled as a "hormone-balancing" oil with suspected weak estrogenic activity, oncologists strictly forbid its use for patients treating hormone-receptor-positive breast, uterine, or ovarian cancers. The goal is to eliminate any outside compound that could faintly mimic estrogen.
Cancer therapies severely compromise the skin barrier. Geranium oil contains known dermal allergens (linalool, geraniol, and citronellol). Applying it to fragile, radiation-exposed underarm skin drastically increases the risk of severe chemical irritation, burning, and contact dermatitis. )
- Shelf Life (from date of distillation): 3 years*
- Perfumery Note: Base Note
- Volatility: Very Slow (Stays on the skin for 6–12+ hours)
- Aromatic Character: Warm, resinous, balsamic, slightly woody, with a faint, clean citrus-like top facet.
- Role in the Deodorant: Frankincense acts as a natural fixative. In your formula, it bonds with the light, fast-evaporating molecules of the Sweet Orange and Lavender, physically slowing down their evaporation rate so the entire deodorant smells fresh for much longer.
- Skin Benefit: It is legendary in skincare for its tissue-toning properties, helping to soothe and repair sensitive, friction-prone underarm skin.
- Safety & Contraindications: No known contraindications or safety issues.
*On the shelf life of Frankincense, some Aromatherapists will say Frankincense has a 10 to 20 year shelf life and gets better with age like patchouli. However, therapeutically speaking this is not completety true but it is true aromatically and there is a difference.
Frankincense is a resin-derived oil. While it contains volatile monoterpenes, it also contains heavier sesquiterpenes and resinous compounds. Over 10 to 20 years, the harsh, sharp top notes (the turpentine-like smell) evaporate or break down.
The alpha-pinene and limonene inside it will have oxidized into chemical byproducts called peroxides and epoxides.
The remaining oil becomes thick, syrupy, and develops a deeply smooth, sweet, and balsamic aroma.
So a 3+ year bottle of Frankincense might smell amazing, but its not suited for topical or even internal therapeutic use as the a-pinene which is the main therapeutic agent Aromatherapists use Frankincense for consists around 30% of the oil and the limone around 20% has already oxidized, rather, it is best to use for perfumery or ritual use.
Having said this though, an unopened bottle of Frankincense, with no contact to oxygen (no-headspace in the bottle), factory-sealed, stored in dark glass, and kept in a cool, temperature-controlled environment (like an aromatherapy fridge), it can remain chemically stable and therapeutically viabale for 10 to 20 years.
The strict 2 to 3-year clock begins primarily once you break the seal and introduce "headspace" (oxygen inside the bottle).
🌲Crisp Mint & Smoked Wood (Masculine) blend🌲:
- Shelf Life (from date of distillation): 3 years
- Perfumery Note: Top Note
- Volatility: Ultra-Fast (Evaporates within 30–60 minutes)
- Aromatic Character: Crisp, camphorous, piercing, fresh, and medicinal.
- Role in Deodorant: It delivers an immediate feeling of clinical cleanliness and respiratory refreshment. It cuts through any existing stale odours instantly upon application.
- Safety & Contraindications: If oxidized, it may cause irritation or sensitization. It may antidote homeopathic remedies. It is too strong to use with babies or children under ten years old on their faces or in a steam. Use with caution on children between 5-10 years old. Care must be taken when using with asthmatics though this is more likely to be an issue with inhalation/diffusion than topical axillary application.
(In addition to the above safety & contraindications, some Aromatherapists and Aromatherapy texts state that Narrow-Leaved Peppermint essential oil should not be used during the first trimester of pregnancy and to not be used if you have high blood pressure or have epilepsy.
Though I agree with not using ANY essential oil in the first trimester of pregnancy, I disagree with not using Eucalyptus radiata if you have high blood pressure. Though I do agree with avoid it if you have epilepsy.
First off, on Epilepsy.
The chemical profile of Eucalyptus radiata is dominated by a monoterpene oxide called 1,8-cineole (accounting for 60% to 70% of the oil). While 1,8-cineole is excellent for clearing respiratory airways, it easily crosses the blood-brain barrier due to its small molecular weight and highly fat-soluble (lipophilic) structure. Once inside the central nervous system, it acts directly on brain tissue.
Medical studies suggest that 1,8-cineole induces seizures through two primary neurological pathways: - Blockade of Potassium (K⁺) Channels: In a healthy brain, potassium channels act as brakes to stop neurons from firing uncontrollably. 1,8-cineole inhibits these channels, preventing the brain from calming down its own electrical impulses.
- Upregulation of Calcium (Ca²⁺) Currents: It simultaneously increases the inward flow of calcium into brain cells. This combination of blocked potassium brakes and accelerated calcium gas pedals causes a rapid state of neuronal hyperexcitability.
Numerous case studies document healthy individuals with no prior history of epilepsy suffering sudden, self-limiting grand mal (tonic-clonic) seizures within minutes to hours of breathing in heavy eucalyptus steam or applying concentrated eucalyptus products to their skin.
For individuals who already have diagnosed epilepsy, their baseline seizure threshold is already compromised. Introducing a powerful pro-convulsant like eucalyptus can easily overpower their anti-epileptic medications, triggering a sudden breakthrough seizure or leading to status epilepticus (a prolonged, dangerous state of continuous seizure activity).
Children possess much thinner skin, faster metabolic absorption rates, and immature developing brains, making them exceptionally vulnerable to eucalyptus-induced central nervous system depression and seizures.
Though this is more likely to be an issue with diffusion, direction inhalation, steam inhalation, full body massage or internal use rather than axillary application, the potential of eucalyptus triggering an epileptic episode is there.
Now onto Blood Pressure (BP)
Old Aromatherapy texts thought that Eucalyptus due to its stimulating, 1,8 cineole (eucaltyptol) constituent would raise BP because of its 'stimulating' nature hence where this safety warning came from.
There is NO Scientific or Clinical Evidence which supports not using Eucalyptus radiata on someone with high blood pressure. Infact, Clinical studies demonstrate that short-term inhalation of eucalyptus oil significantly reduces both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. A notable randomized clinical trial published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine tracked patients recovering from major surgery. Patients who inhaled eucalyptus oil for 30 minutes daily experienced a statistically significant reduction in blood pressure and heart rate compared to the control group. The volatile molecules of 1,8-cineole interact with the olfactory system, suppressing the sympathetic nervous system (your "fight or flight" response) while augmenting the parasympathetic nervous system ("rest and digest"). This reduces cortisol, eases arterial tension, and prompts physiological relaxation.
When applied to the skin such as in this deodorant, the chemical components of Eucalyptus radiata cross the dermal barrier and enter the localized bloodstream.1,8-cineole acts as a mild, natural local vasodilator. It triggers the smooth muscle tissues of the surrounding blood vessels to relax and widen.
Because this formulation uses eucalyptus at a safe 2.00% dilution, topical absorption into the armpit will not cause systemic hypertension (high blood pressure) or hypotension (low blood pressure). The localized blood flow increase simply results in a refreshing, slightly cooling sensation on the skin.)

- Perfumery Note: Middle (Heart) Note
- Volatility: Medium (Lasts around 3–4 hours)
- Aromatic Character: Crisp, sharp, dry-spicy, warm, and faintly woody. It is not "sneezable" like kitchen pepper; instead, it is highly aromatic and vibrant.
- Role in the Deodorant: Black Pepper is a brilliant bridge note. It seamlessly connects the ultra-volatile, medicinal top note of Eucalyptus to the heavy, dense base notes of Cedarwood and Patchouli. Without it, the fragrance would feel disjointed; with it, the scent evolves smoothly as your body heat activates it throughout the day.
- Skin Benefit: It stimulates mild microcirculation, which assists in keeping the underarm skin tissue healthy, while contributing strong natural antimicrobial properties against sweat bacteria.
- Safety & Contraindications: May cause skin irritation if oxidized or using old oil.
Some Aromatherapists and Old Aromatherapy texts state not to use this oil if undergoing cancer reatment nor if you aren pregnant, breasfeeding, on babies or children. The only one I disagree with has to do with Cancer.
The primary clinical reason to avoid black pepper products during oncology treatment lies in its ability to alter how the human body metabolizes medication. In pharmacology, black pepper is famous for containing an alkaloid called piperine.
Piperine disables two major drug-clearing mechanisms in the body: the CYP3A4 liver enzyme and a cellular flush pump called P-glycoprotein. By turning these off, black pepper allows medications to flood the bloodstream at much higher, uncontrolled concentrations.
If a patient absorbs or ingests high amounts of black pepper active compounds, it can throw off the strict dosage of chemotherapy or immunotherapy drugs. This makes the life-saving cancer treatment either highly toxic or completely unpredictable.
Pure steam-distilled Black Pepper essential oil consists almost entirely of volatile monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes (like beta-caryophyllene and pinene). Piperine is too heavy a molecule to travel through steam, meaning it is not present in pure essential oil.
There the Black Pepper essential oil is completely safe to use if undergoing cancer treatment. Ground or freshly cracked black pepper, Black Pepper CO2 Total extract (which contains 25% to 55% piperine), black pepper powder capsules or black pepper tincture is what should be avoided if undergoing cancer treatment.
It appears to me that Old Aromatherapy texts and some 'Vintage' Aromatherapists who are still teaching do not differentiate between these and lump everything black pepper into this safety warning.

- Shelf Life (from date of distillation): 8 years
- Perfumery Note: Base Note
- Volatility: Slow (Lasts 6–12+ hours)
- Aromatic Character: Woody, dry, balsamic, warm, and reminiscent of pencil shavings or campfire smoke.
- Role in Deodorant: Cedarwood provides the primary masculine character. Because it evaporates incredibly slowly, it stays bound to the oils and waxes on your skin, steadily releasing a clean, dry, woody scent for hours.
- Safety & Contraindications: There are no known safety issues with this species of cedarwood, nor are there any no known contraindications for Himalayan (Indian) Cedarwood (Cedrus deodara) or the Virginian Cedarwood which isn't an actual cedar but rather a juiper (Juniperus virginiana)/
Having said that though, some Aromatherapists and some older Aromatherpay texts list Cedarwood Atlas, Cedarwood Viriginiana and Cedarwood Deodara with the following contraindications:
- Not to be used if pregnant, breastfeeding or on babies or children.
- Not to be used if undergoing cancer treatment.
- Can cause severe thirst and therefore not suitable for those with kidney disorders.
Lets address first the "Not to be used in pregnant, breastfeeding or on babies or children."
This is more based on the 'precautionary' principle as there is NO scientific or clinical evidence to indicate any issue with cedarwood atlas during pregnancy, breastfeeding, etc.
This precautionary statment is based on the outdated Functional Group Theory, a traditional framework that groups essential oil molecules by their chemical families (such as alcohols, esters, and ketones) to predict therapeutic properties. While popular for decades as an educational shortcut, modern scientific review shows it is largely an unreliable way to determine biological activity.
How does this apply to this safetr statement.
Well in Functional Group Theory, ketones are considered to be difficult for a developing or infant liver to metabolise whislt possessing highly neurotoxic and aborfacient properties.
However NOT all Ketones are neurotoxic, aborfacient or problematic, so lumping all ketones together as being highly neurotoxic, aborfacient, etc is simply being lazy and not based in any kind scientific evidence.
Atlas Cedarwood oil is structurally dominated by sesquiterpenes (like himachalenes) but crucially contains roughly 10% to 15% sesquiterpene ketones, specifically alpha, beta, and gamma -atlantone.
Though alantone is a Ketone, it is a much larger and heavier molecule than lets say alpha or beta thujone that is found in Common Sage (Salvia officinalis) essential oil.
Sesquiterpene ketones like atlantone do not cross the placenta or blood-brain barrier like thujone nor do they pos the same risks.
So alatone is a completely safe ketone. Another reason for this incorrect safety warning being applied to Cedarwood is due to the botanical confusion where some people are mixing and confusing cedarwood atlantica with the false cedarwood known commonly as White Cedar or Thuja (Thuja occidentalis) also nicknamed Northern White Cedar which cotnains 50% up to 70% of thujone, the notorious monoterpene ketone that is a scientifically and clinically proven neurotoxin and abortifacient.
- Shelf Life (from date of distillation): 20+ Years
- Perfumery Note: Base Note & Fixative
- Volatility: Ultra-Slow (Can last for days on clothing/surfaces)
- Aromatic Character: Earthy, musky, deep, smoky, and sweet.
- Role in Deodorant: Patchouli is the "secret weapon" in natural perfumery. It acts as a natural fixative, meaning its heavy molecules physically slow down the evaporation of the fast-moving Eucalyptus and Cedarwood. It anchors the entire formula and gives the deodorant true staying power.
- Safety & Contraindications:
- Drug interaction with oral use may inhibit blood clotting due to the alpha-bulnesene which has been shown to inhibit blood platelet aggregation. It is unknown if external use or inhalation can also cause this.Though not a contraindication, it may cause a loss or decrease in apetite in some people though this is unlikely to be an issue with axillary application but more of an side effect via inhalation.
⚗️How to make the Deodorant⚗️:
Prepare Phase A:
- Weigh all Phase A ingredients into a heatproof vessel.
- Heat gently using a double boiler until the candelilla wax is fully melted and the liquid is completely clear 70°C–75°C (158°F - 167°F).
Incorporate Phase B:
- Remove the vessel from the heat source.
- Sift the Phase B powders directly into the hot oils.
- Whisk vigorously or use a high-shear mini-mixer to ensure the powders are completely dispersed without any clumping.
Cool-Down Phase C:
- Allow the mixture to cool to roughly 55°C–60°C (131°F - 140°F).
- Add the Vitamin E and essential oils.
- Stir thoroughly to distribute.
Pour & Set:
- Pour the liquid immediately into your deodorant packaging while it is still fluid.
- Transfer the filled containers straight into the fridge for 1 hour to flash-cool, preventing the powders from settling to the bottom.
🦺Formulation Tips/Adjustments🦺:
With these adjustments keep in mind to ALWAYS maintain the 100% rule:
Any percentage you add to one ingredient must be subtracted from another (usually the liquid oils in Phase A) so the final formula always equals 100%.
- To make the stick harder (for very hot climates) increase Candelilla Wax by 1% to 2% and reduce Jojoba Oil by the exact same amount.
- If using cardboad deodorant push up tubes, make the solid deodorant harder as per above adjustment. Before pouring into cardboard tubes, make sure deodorant is cooled to 52°C–55°C (125.6°F - 131°F).
- To increase sweat absorption, increase Arrowroot Powder to 23% and decrease Jojoba Oil to 16%.
- To make the glide smoother, increase Castor Oil to 12% and decrease Meadowfoam Seed Oil to 13%.
Deodorant Shelf Life: Based on the expiration date of the individual ingredients used.
