What Happens When AI Policy Meets a Real Classroom?

Jody Britten spent a year reading the AI policies of more than 100 school districts and sorting them into a five-level framework, running from active promotion at one end to outright prohibition at the other. Her finding: most districts land well toward the cautious end, and their policies are frequently disconnected from the state guidance intended to inform them. The episode pairs her with a second guest who helped write policy from inside a system — someone who knows what gets negotiated, softened, or quietly dropped between a draft and a board vote.

CREATIVE FORCE: Every AI policy encodes a theory of what a school subject is, whether its authors intended one or not. A rule written mainly to prevent students from quietly obtaining answers asserts that mathematics is a body of answers worth guarding. But if mathematics is a creative act — conjecture, false start, revision — then the thing worth guarding was never the answer. It was the student's authorship of the reasoning. Districts are drafting this language now; if mathematics educators are not in the room, the definition gets written without us.

Seattle-based Wild Zebra has raised $6 million to expand its AI learning platform for math and reading, wagering that a purpose-built educational product can hold its ground against the free general-purpose study tools now shipping from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. The funding is modest by edtech standards. The design decision behind it is not. The example in the reporting is worth sitting with. A student who has told the system she is interested in baking gets a fractions problem framed around a cookie. She works out that each section is one-twelfth. The AI confirms that step — and then asks the next question, rather than finishing the problem for her. Restraint, in other words, is the feature. In a market where speed to the answer is the default competitive axis, a company has raised money on the premise that not answering is what parents and schools will pay for.
CREATIVE FORCE: This is productive struggle turned into a product specification, and that reframing is genuinely useful to us. Mathematical creativity does not happen in the moment a correct answer appears; it happens in the interval before it, when a learner is holding an unresolved situation and has to invent a way through. A tool that closes that interval efficiently is not neutral — it is deleting the part where the mathematics lives. The practical takeaway for anyone evaluating software this fall is a single diagnostic question: what does this tool do at the precise moment a student is stuck? Watch that behavior rather than the feature list. It tells you what the designers believe learning is.

Drawing on data from the first half of 2026 alongside an analysis of how students actually use its Clarity writing-transparency tool, Turnitin reports that 48 percent of respondents say teachers and administrators carry primary responsibility for AI implementation in their schools and districts. Technology leaders account for 17 percent; cross-functional committees, 16 percent. The report also registers rising demand for education-specific AI tools rather than repurposed consumer ones, and emphasizes steering students toward AI as a support for thinking rather than a replacement for it.
A note on provenance: this is vendor-produced research, and Turnitin sells into the market it is describing. Read the framing with that in mind. The underlying distribution, though, matches what most of us are seeing on the ground — the people integrating these tools are overwhelmingly the people teaching, not the people procuring.
CREATIVE FORCE: If practitioners are doing the integrating, then practitioners are the ones defining what AI-mediated mathematical work looks like — largely without a mandate, a budget line, or much time. That is a real burden and a real opening. The habits being established right now in individual classrooms will harden into norms long before any policy catches up to them. Which means the case for mathematics as a creative discipline is not going to be won in a district document. It will be won or lost in a thousand small decisions about when to let a student sit with a hard problem, and those decisions are being made by the people reading this.
