The hidden risk in back to back breeding of dogs needing c-sections
Whilst C-Sections can be life saving for both mother and puppies, repeated back to back breeding in dogs that depend on surgical delivery carries serious risks:
🔴 Health risks to the mother
📍Major strain on the uterus and abdominal muscles
📍Increased surgical risks with each c-section (bleeding, infection. Anaesthetic complications)
📍Higher chance of uterine rupture or scar tissue complication’s
📍Long term decline in reproduction and overall health
🔴 Risks to Puppies
📍Premature or weak litters if the mothers body has not fully healed
📍Increased risk of still births or neonatal loss
🔴 Welfare concerns
📍 Mothers do not get the recovery time they need between pregnancies
📍Reduced quality of life and shortened lifespan
💡 Best practice: Ethical breeders give dogs ample time to recover between litters and in breeders where CSection are common they limit the number of surgeries in a lifetime and give a minimum of 12 months recovery between litters. Responsible breeding always puts the health and wellbeing of the mother first.
