I don't like school!
I remember days when I did not like school. Some of those days were 45 years ago and some of them were last month.
Let's face it - It is not always wonderful to be in class. Whether it is as a learner who is 7, in an awful class full of smelly kids and snot on their noses - noisy and hungry and smelly! ... Or as a teacher in a class full of matrics and they just don't want to hear Hamlet's speech.
But then you get the days when it is delightful, when you get saved by the teacher who takes you to the front of the class when you're seven and she tells you everything is going to be okay. She says to you, "Come and sit here with me. Let's draw" and then it's actually the maths class.
When you are in grade 8 and the teacher says, "Thank you for helping me, Lourens," and it's the first person that thanked you for anything in a year. Whether it is 40 years later and a person says, "Oh sir, you just made my day."
It can be so wonderful to be in education and the positive experiences negate the negative ones 90,000 times. That's not a number I just made up. There is someone out there, I can't remember who for the life of me, somehow calibrated how negative experiences and positive experiences are weighted. Only God knows how this person did that but he or she worked out that any positive experience actually sweeps 90,000 negative units of energy (I don't know) off the table.
Now, I don't know how scientific this was and I am not going to Google it but I can tell you from experience that having a wonderful learning experience is something that cannot be beaten. I think there are only two types of experiences that are kinda better:
  1. The one I can't talk about. ;-)
  2. The other is traveling and seeing a site like the Leaning Tower of Pisa for the first time.
So welcome to my skool.com pages. I decided to name it my "Academy". It sounds very posh, doesn't it? Well it's not really going to be posh. It's just going to be me sharing lots of stuff that I hope is interesting. This is not only my hobby; this is what I see as my future career. Hopefully in the next five to ten years, if God spares me, I can build something here that is really remarkable, and if you help me, I'm sure it will happen. And why not!
Please introduce yourself. Don't be shy! Tell us about yourself. Ask if you have questions. Share your favorite resources and your travel destinations (or dreams!) and perhaps your favorite books. You can even share your links here if you want to advertise. It's your classroom with mine. It's our academy, not mine only, and let's all be very "posh" about it and let's enjoy the learning experience because my goal, for you, is to have a delightful experience when you are here.
