πŸ”’ Counting from 0 to 10 in Moroccan Arabic (Darija)
Learning how to count is one of the most important foundations when starting Moroccan Darija πŸ‡²πŸ‡¦Numbers are used every day β€” shopping, ordering food, asking prices, telling time, or talking about people and objects.
In this lesson, you’ll learn:
βœ… Numbers from 0 to 10 in Moroccan Darija
βœ… How Moroccans actually count things in real life
βœ… The 2 key rules for counting correctly
βœ… Common mistakes to avoid
βœ… Exercises with clear solutions
πŸ”’ Numbers from 0 to 10 in Moroccan Darija
0 β†’ Sifr (Zero)
1 β†’ Wa7ed
2 β†’ Jouj / Zouj
3 β†’ Telata
4 β†’ Reb3a
5 β†’ Khemsa
6 β†’ Setta
7 β†’ Seb3a
8 β†’ Tmenya
9 β†’ Tes3od
10 β†’ 3eshra
πŸ“Œ Note: Some Moroccans say jouj, others say zouj β€” both are correct and widely used.
🧠 Rule #1 β€” Using β€œOne” (Wa7ed) :
To say one in Moroccan Darija, you can use:
πŸ‘‰ Wa7ed + definite singular noun
Examples:
  • 1 banana β†’ Wa7ed elbanana
  • 1 man β†’ Wa7ed errajel
  • 1 school β†’ Wa7ed elmedrasa
πŸ’‘ Important tip: You can also skip β€œone” completely and just say the noun:
  • banana
  • rajel
  • medrasa
Or place wa7ed/we7da after the noun for emphasis:
  • banana we7da
  • rajel wa7ed
🧠 Rule #2 β€” Counting from 2 to 10 :
To count from 2 to 10, Darija uses this structure:
πŸ‘‰ Number + dial (or d) + definite plural noun
Examples:
  • 3 bananas β†’ Telata dial elbananate
  • 4 cups β†’ Reb3a d elkisan
  • 10 boys β†’ 3eshra dial eddrari
πŸ“Œ This literally means β€œthree of the bananas” β€” and that’s normal Darija, not formal Arabic.
⚠️ Special Case β€” Number 2 (Jouj / Zouj)
Number 2 is flexible in Darija:
βœ” Jouj d elbananate
βœ” Jouj bananate
But for 3 and above, you MUST use dial / d:
❌ Telata bananate
βœ… Telata dial elbananate
