For most engineers, every advancement in AI means less job stability. Every time OpenAI or Anthropic drops a new update, millions of engineers around the world scramble to mess with it and see if they'll still have a job in 6 months. My wish is that these men and women understood what's ACTUALLY happening in the market and how it's genuinely of benefit to them. Here's the funny thing about the Fractional AI Engineer model: Every AI advancement that makes you question your job stability is an advancement that gives you more ammo to work as a freelancer with an SMB who grows more and more confused on what to do. You, technically, become more replaceable to your AI-fluent manager, and become more necessary to a small business owner who is AI-illiterate. Right now, there are more services and systems that you can provide to an SMB than ever before. There's more awareness from SMBs around what AI can do, and demand for hiring somebody who can help them implement it. For your W2, AI getting better isn't really a good thing.
