Are PDFs dead?
I have been building digital businesses long enough to see trends come and go like the tide. Lately, there is a lot of noise about the PDF being dead. Some people in the tech world are very quick to say we should leave it behind for good.
I was recently part of an AI community where I shared my thoughts on this. I suggested that even as we move toward new systems, we should still offer both options to our clients. I wanted to help people adapt slowly rather than forcing a big change all at once.
To my surprise, those comments were deleted. It felt a bit cold. It reminded me that sometimes in the rush to be modern, we forget to be human. When I asked the community owner why my comments seemed to have been deleted, she said: "PDFs ARE DEAD!"
PDFs have some real problems, too. They are hard to read on a phone. You have to pinch and zoom, which is frustrating for many of us. They also aren't very accessible for people using screen readers. If you want to track how many people actually read your guide, a PDF won't tell you much.
But they aren't gone yet.
A PDF is a safe space for many. For things like contracts or workbooks you want to print, it still feels solid and real. I personally love to print and read with a cup of coffee away from screens. But maybe I'm becoming old school. LOL.
We are seeing a shift where AI is making these files more useful. You can now chat with a document to get a summary or find a specific fact. This is a helpful step forward.
My advice is to stay grounded. If you are sharing a resource, try offering a mobile-friendly web page and a PDF download. This shows you care about how your audience learns👇👇. It gives them a choice.
Moving slowly is okay. You don't have to break everything to be current. Just keep your clients' comfort in mind as you try new tools.
Thank you for reading all the way to here.
