Kreyòl pale Kreyòl Komprann - History of a language
Historically, Haitian Creole (Kreyòl) has been only a spoken language passed on from generation to generation. Haitian Creole (Kreyòl) became a widely accepted and standardized written language following official orthographic reforms in 1979 and the early 1980's, which established a phonetic spelling system. While early, non-standardized writing existed, such as the poem Lisette quitté la plaine (c. 1757), modern, consistent orthography for literature and education emerged in the late 20th century. And in 1987, the year my family immigrated to the United States, Haitian Creole was recognized as an official language.
