First off, thank you to everyone who posted Autumn leaves for the september challenge. We had great submissions, very varied, it was vert cool. It's never too late for those of you who would like to post it eventually. For octobre i thought we might do ''Blue Monk''. I think a blues could be cool. So like for september, when you're ready post your video under ''october challenge''. You could play just the chords, just the melody, a chord melody, improv... anything you find challenging. You can find it in ''the vault''.

At 7 Club in Chapel Allerton (round the corner from me) last night. I love the tempo of this, upbeat & laid back at the same time :) https://youtu.be/_5in7Etingg?si=bMt11SkI9n4jLsJc

One of the aha moments I have had with the teaching is that you can practice soloing! Who would have known. I thought the essence of soloing was deep rooted creativity. How can you practise that? But you can. Following the teaching I realized that a part of my brain can in fact look for the note to land on for the chord change whereas in the past I have been confused by what pattern do I change from and to. Has anybody else had the same experience or other advice?

I find it very helpful to add step 0.5. I start by learning the melody thoroughly before much else (there’s that old linear brain). I try to learn the words, listen to different versions, etc. Then, I feel I can make music out of it. A Foggy Day in London Town, I’ve gone back to the original. Fred Astaire, “A Damsel in Distress”, 1937. Autumn Leaves, “La Porte de La Nuit” 1946, sung by Yves Montand, “Les Feuilles des Mortes” That’s my musicologist background leaking out. Once I know the song well, then I feel I can go to Step 1. Just my $.02, take your pick, US or Canadian. ELF

I'm sure most people are familiar with Rick Beato's channel (if not, get acquainted). This interview with Tommy Emmanuel popped up in my feed this morning. It contains some really good insights, particularly on practicing, the importance of the melody, and injecting feel into playing. Emmanuel plays a broad range of music, but it applies to jazz, for sure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLIZZ9lIlwg

A couple of month ago i had posted that i was looking for an amp. I would like to thank everyone for their feedback. I finally decided to buy the Fender Tone master Deluxe Reverb. When i tried it with my guitar right next to the tube version i couldn't hear the difference. I'm so happy with my purchase. Hopefully you'll hear it soon... i just need to be able to play Donna Lee!

I just watched this video of 10 jazz guitar players taking on Autumn leaves in 10 very different ways. It was so cool to see how they approached it and how this song that everyone knows can sound so special. https://youtu.be/41KGLQrieb0?si=7wm30VyVrAqUc7vQ

Rhythm is the heartbeat of jazz, and understanding it is crucial for creating that irresistible swing and flow that jazz is known for. Explore the fundamental building blocks of rhythm: including quarter notes, eighth notes, triplets, and more with @Coach Marc-Andre Seguin . Watch the video here:

3-4 years ago I built a tool from a spreadsheet that allows me to lookup the notes of a scale and to see where they are located on the fretboard. Some of you might find it helpful. There are some caveats you will find on the page, but I recommend you view this on you computer. It's easier than the phone. Full disclosure; this is built inn GRID, a spreadsheet developed by a company of which I am a co-founder and head of ops. https://grid.is/@yngvi/chords-scales-and-the-guitar-neck-hGFMY7gORO2S4FmZ2xCqMw

Hi. I just joined the fellowship group and this is my first post. I had the pleasure of attending my second Rocky Mountain Archtop Festival in Olde Town Arvada, CO. The event is sponsored by Henriksen Jazz Amps, (also a local company. I own a Bud 10). This event features an awesome luthier exhibit, workshops by the guest performers, if you sign up for this option, and free concerts and guitar demos of the luthier's guitars on display. I was able to hear many top flight jazz guitarists in an intimate setting which included: Rodney Jones, (a good friend of mine), Barry Greene, Frank Vignola, Jimmy Bruno, Ted Ludwig, Fareed Haque, Sean McGowan and many others. The Festival is now an annual event which occurs in the beginning of September. Consider a trip to Colorado next year. Info can be found on the Henriksen Amp website.

After posting the autumn leaves challenge, Rene told me it would be cool to do it with you guys. Here's what i suggest. Everybody interested works on the song and posts their result before the end of september. You can learn an arrangement, make your own, solo, just melody, just chords... whatever you feel will help you improve. We are here to help each other so i suggest that for one thing to work on we say 2 things we liked... we can also just like. That way we don't end up discouraging others. We are not all at the same level and we can all work on so many things. So if you're interested please respond in the comments... if there's only two of us we might decide to just not do it. https://www.skool.com/jazz-guitar-fellowship/autumn-leaves-720d6f5b?p=08df1637

I decided to share some of my lesson notes that I use while teaching my intermediate to advance students. Today I am sharing a handy chart of seven essential chord shapes that all good guitarist should know by heart. I use C as the root in all the diagrams . In the first column the root (C) is on the E string, 2nd column the A string and third column the D Sting. Each row is a different chord class ,(Major, Minor, Dominant etc.) All questions and comments are most welcome.

If you have never tried to put pen to paper and harmonically analyze a song, this is a great video explanation. Here's Coach Marc's description of it: Welcome to the first video of our series called "Reverse Engineering Jazz Standards" where we dive deep into jazz standards' structure and how they came to be, explained to you from a guitar teacher's perspective. In this video, we will tackle the Kenny Dorham classic, Blue Bossa -- from its key, time signature, chord progression, and more!

I just sliced the tip of my left hand index finger cooking supper. It took about half an hour to stop it bleeding. My left hand is completely immobilised because I don’t want it start bleeding again so there goes my guitar playing for the next few days. It’s a bit of a bummer because I was progressing very nicely with my rubato version of All The Things You Are. ☹️
