Ancestor Altars
This is simply a guide, you know your ancestors and what they like or may require on your altar. If you don't know your ancestors, that's ok too, this guide will help you as it helped me with the ancestors I know and also the ones from long, long ago!
Ancestor Altars Ancestor altars are a mainstay in ancestral veneration. They are one of the primary tools we use to connect with our ancestors in the physical realm. While most people think of a dedicated space filled with spiritual tools when referreferencing a spiritual shrine of this nature, there are actually two types of ancestor altars. First, it is essential to understand that you are an ancestral altar in your own right.
You embody your ancestors' DNA and epigenetic traits, which means that you are, in essence, your ancestors. Your physical body serves as an altar in which your ancestors commune with you on a continuous basis. This is why you must take proper care of yourself because you are effectively taking care of your ancestors when you do so. Maintaining your well-being is actually one form of ancestor veneration that I will discuss later in this chapter. However, in this section, I am referring to an external space dedicated to ancestral spirits. Such a space serves as a focal point for you and your ancestors.
It is a place where you can meditate on the memories of your ancestors. Likewise, it is an area where your ancestors can congregate when you spend time with them or give them offerings. There are many great resources available for learning how to set up an ancestor altar. I discuss some of the basics in this section. As you read my recommendations, note that you can keep your altar as simple or as complicated as you wish. You don't need to spend a lot of money to build your ancestor altar. It is also not necessary to furnish it all at once. Ancestor altars tend to be a work in progress for the average person. The most important thing about an ancestor altar is the energy you put into creating and maintaining it. The first thing you need to determine is what will serve as the base or foundation of your altar. You don’t need an entire room dedicated to your ancestor altar - although you can use a whole room for your altar.
Typically, a table, stand, container, window seal, wall mount, closet, drawer, chest, etc., will do the trick if you set it up correctly. On the other hand, you do need to be concerned about the material composition of the base. It is best to select something with a surface made from natural materials such as wood, glass, stone, clay, etc. Synthetic materials are not conducive to connecting with the spirit realm. Next, you need to decide where you plan to place your altar. I recommend keepkeeping it in a low-traffic area whenever possible. An ancestor altar is an intimate tool that deserves respect and reverence.
Keeping it in common areas with high traffic can disrupt the flow and energy of your ancestors in the altar space. It is also commonly recommended to keep altars out of bedroom and bathroom spaces. These are areas that require the greatest level of privacy. It is not a good idea to invite ancestors into such spaces because of the types of activities that generally occur in bedrooms and bathrooms. However, if you don’t have a more appropriate place to put your altar, you can set it up in your bedroom and use a partition to section off the area. Doing so will give you a greater level of privacy.
The same applies to placing it in a bathroom if you live in studio-style living quarters without partisans. There are several ways to address privacy issues if this is a concern for you. If your entire family uses the altar, it may be necessary to keep it in a common area. Even in such cases, I still recommend keeping it away from the pryprying eyes of guests or visitors who may not understand or may be opposed to it. A shared common area less frequented by guests may be the best place to keep an altar for use by your entire family. Your ancestor altar is not and should not be open to scrutiny of any kind. It is a sacred, personal artifact similar to a journal that should be protected and guarded at all times.
