I contacted Capital One’s fraud department to ask if they could reopen my account after the recent shutdown. I wasn’t necessarily expecting a reversal, I was mostly trying to understand the reason on their end.
The agent explained that they couldn’t see the exact cause for the closure, but mentioned that not being able to verify my identity through my wireless carrier had triggered a flag in their system.
This made me wonder, could using a prepaid phone number, or having less than six months of credit history, lead to an account shutdown because identity verification fails?
