When has your comfort prevented you from acknowledging the danger that lives beside you?
I was getting ready for bed last night and I went to get my cat, Zuzu, who was hanging out outside. I walked over to the ledge he was pitched above my refrigerator and gently started petting him to begin to coax him down.
It was only then that I realized inches away from my hand was a scorpion ready to strike. My brain went into panic mode if I tried to move my cat I risked my cat getting agitated and moving rapidly. If I tried to remove the scorpion I risked the scorpion freaking out and going into a stinging frenzy. So I waited. I waited for the scorpion to scurry away, I quickly grabbed my cat and killed the scorpion in rapid succession.
Cats may have 9 lives but every time my cats risk one I have a mini heart attack.
As I was sipping my coffee this morning I reflected on this and I realized this is such a good analogy, I had to share it. A lot of times when we are comfortable we donโt know how much danger we are in. When we see the danger, the hurt, the risk of our current comfort, we may want to force rapid change, rapid transition. We may want to get up and burn it all to the ground. We may want to kill the scorpion immediately, even if we arenโt in a position to do so.
Iโve found there is a pause between awareness and elimination of a problem. This phase is uncomfortable, scary, uncertain. This phase is temporary. The brave thing is to prepare yourself for when your opportunity for action is available. A brief moment where the risk is a little less so you can take swift action and make the changes that are necessary.
So where are you comfortably laying next to a scorpion in your life? Or maybe someone or something you love is sitting next to a scorpion and doesnโt even realize?
Iโd love to hear your thoughts below
Have an amazing week!
