The PREP(s) Framework
How to sound intelligent and clear when answering questions you’re not prepared for.
This framework is the most crucial one to practice.
Force fit this framework so you get comfortable with it — when it becomes second nature, impromptu speaking becomes your superpower.
I've recorded a video to help you familiarize yourself with it.
Below is a written recap too.
  1. POINT: a one-line summary that encapsulates the answer to the question.
Note -- you should aim to pause for at least 3 seconds to think of your answer, instead of jumping right into the answer, because you'll then sound more polished and concise.
2. REASON: a one to two-line explanation that describes why your answer is the way it is.
3. Example: a data point or anecdote that substantiates your point. Ideally it's both.
4. POINT: A rephrase of your original point -- to let it stick with your audience.
5. SEGEUE: A transition with an open-ended question (start with "what," "how" or "why") to more effectively solicit a response.
Let me know what you think!
