The Act of Seeing Value
Waking up each day with the intention to find value in life and specifically others has become a perspective I thoroughly enjoy.
If people can wake up mad at the world for no reason, then I can find joy, happiness, and value for no reason.
I chose to see value in my failures, in myself, in my circumstances, in my family, friends, job, and in others. Many people are on a crusade to disqualify themselves and others for whatever reason they can justify in their minds… even if those reasons aren’t true nor make any sense. Looking for any excuse to hate others, be unhappy about life, or just be negative about everything.
I’ve chosen for myself that I will attempt to look for any reasons to qualify others and myself in my mind. Looking for every excuse to see value in us, be happy, and optimistic. I look at others and see value in them, and search for ways to add value to them.
Our perspective of a person will largely determine our response to the person. If we don’t view people as valuable, important, and worthy of our respect. Then we may not treat them as such. To treat people as valuable and important, you must view, think, talk, & feel that they are so.
I’m reminded of a quote from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe that said,
“Treat a man as he appears to be, and you make him worse. But treat a man as if he already were what he potentially could be, and you make him what he should be.”
This is also how I view the way we see and treat ourselves. Even further, how we treat our circumstances, jobs, education, wives, children, goals, ambitions, passions, and possessions. We can make ourselves worse or better simply by the way we view ourselves.
A simple perspective shift, whether naturally occurring or forced, can truly change our lives. How you see things is going to be how you treat them, how much you invest in them, and how much of an impact that investment will have on you or it.
Same person, same circumstances, same job, same education, same wife and kids, same goals, same ambitions, same passions, and same possessions, yet a completely different attitude. A brand new zeal, a deeper investment, an enhanced vision, greater impacts, better results, rejuvenated motivation, and an unyielding devotion.
As John C. Maxwell says, “The only way we can be consistent and authentic in valuing others is to see value in ourselves.”
My search for value is primarily about first identifying it, and second, finding ways to add to it. Identifying it is important to me because it will further my desire to add to it.
No one wants to pour into a leaking bucket. I will not be a leaking bucket to myself or others. And ultimately, my aim is to add value to others, and that’s why I daily see value and look for ways to add value to myself, others, and life. We are people of value, who value people, and add value to them.
