I was in a PD this week about having successful back to school season and the instructor shared an idea I’m definitely stealing.
Expectation post it’s!
Give each student a sticky note and tell them to write one expectation they have of you as the teacher, or what they’d like the classroom to look/feel/sound like.
Allow 3-5 minutes preferably with you standing at the door facing away or right in the hall etc. (I don’t love the completely in the hall option for myself). Students should put their post it on the whiteboard. Completely anonymous.
Then you return and collect each sticky and discuss it. Maybe add to an anchor chart etc. it’s a great time to discuss why we can’t “have free time all day”
It also allows for accountability. You can share your expectations of them, talk about them holding you accountable for yours etc. I really like this for how they want it to “feel” because it feels like an easy opening for “how can we achieve that together”
I’m going to tweak and try something similar in my fourth grade room in just 3 short weeks!!!
