See One, Do One, Teach One
wrote an awesome post about their training style! Decided I'd piggy back off it and drop my own training style!
One of the best teaching methods I picked up during my time in the Navy is the "See One, Do One, Teach One" approach. It’s simple but incredibly effective.
Here’s how it works:
1. See One – I show someone how to do something step by step. This way, they can visualize the process and understand the reasoning behind it.
2. Do One – After watching, they immediately try it themselves. This hands-on practice helps reinforce what they’ve just learned. (Make sure to ask questions to force them to think more deeply about the process they're doing)
3. Teach One – Here’s the key part. After they’ve practiced, I ask them to teach it back to me or to someone else. Why? Because teaching forces a deeper level of understanding. No one wants to feel unprepared (or dumb) when explaining something, so they naturally dig deeper into the material.
That last step—teaching it back—is where real mastery happens. It encourages them to internalize the process, and it also identifies any gaps in their understanding. If they can teach it confidently, they truly get it.
I’ve found that this method works not just in the Navy but in any setting—whether it’s training someone on a new system, onboarding a new hire, or mentoring someone in their career. It’s a great way to build confidence and skill at the same time.
Actionable Tip: Try using the "See One, Do One, Teach One" method with someone on your team this week. When you delegate a task, ask them to teach it back to you after they’ve practiced it. You’ll be surprised at how much more effective it is!
Who else has tried this method, or what are some teaching styles you’ve found helpful?
