START HERE: Welcome to Blue Coat Arms Academy
Hey there. Welcome to the community. I'm Hootey—gunsmith, family man, and founder of Blue Coat Arms Company (BCAC).
Before you dive in, take 5 minutes to read this. It'll tell you everything you need to know about who we are, what we're building here, and how to be part of it.
What This Community Is (And Isn't)
This is a space to:
  • Learn firearm maintenance, restoration, and gunsmithing from real shop experience
  • Ask questions without judgment (seriously, no dumb questions here)
  • Connect with other gun owners, hunters, collectors, and makers
  • Get behind-the-scenes access to BCAC projects and shop life
  • Build skills and knowledge together as a community
This is NOT:
  • A place to argue politics or culture wars
  • A shortcut to becoming a gunsmith (it takes years and dedication)
  • A forum for illegal activity or anything that breaks federal/state/local firearms laws
  • A place where we pretend to have all the answers (we're learning too)
Who We Are
Blue Coat Arms Company has been doing this for over a decade. We specialize in:
  • Full-service gunsmithing (restoration, custom builds, repairs, maintenance)
  • Civil War reproduction firearms and antique restoration
  • Custom fabrication and metalworking
  • Education and community building
We're family-owned and operated. My wife Lydia is my partner in this, and our kids are growing up in the shop. This isn't just a business—it's our life.
Our Philosophy: We believe in the "ever-learning student" mindset. Gunsmithing isn't something you master—it's something you keep learning about. That's what makes it beautiful. We're here to share what we know, learn from each other, and build something real together.
We value:
  • Authenticity – Real photos, real stories, real problems
  • Craftsmanship – Quality over shortcuts
  • Honesty – We tell you what we know and what we don't
  • Self-reliance – Teaching you to take care of your own gear
  • Community – No gatekeeping. We're all in this together
Community Rules (Keep It Simple)
1. Be Respectful
We welcome all perspectives. Disagree thoughtfully. No personal attacks, harassment, or discrimination. We're all here to learn.
2. Stay On Topic
This is about firearms, craftsmanship, maintenance, and the community. Off-topic spam gets removed.
3. No Politics (Mostly)
We're pro-Second Amendment and pro-self-reliance. We don't need to relitigate elections or culture wars here. Focus on what unites us: the craft and the community.
4. Share Authentically
Real stories, real questions, real problems.
5. Respect Legality
Follow all federal, state, and local firearms laws. We won't help with anything illegal. Period.
6. Family-Friendly
Kids might be around. Keep it clean and respectful.
What happens if you break the rules? We'll give you a heads-up. Repeated violations result in removal. We're not here to be jerks—we're here to keep this a good place for everyone.
How to Get Started
  1. Introduce yourself – Head to the "Member Introductions" thread and tell us about yourself. What do you shoot? What brought you here? We'd love to know.
  2. Ask a question – Seriously. That's what we're here for. No judgment.
  3. Explore the community – See what other members are working on, what they're asking, what they're learning.
A Few Things to Know
We're learning too. I've been doing this for a decade, but I don't have all the answers. If I don't know something, I'll tell you. And I'll learn from you too.
This is a real community. We're not here to sell you stuff (though we do have merch and services if you're interested). We're here to build something real with people who care about the craft.
We're family-first. You'll see family content mixed in with shop content. That's intentional. This business is built on family values, and we're not going to pretend otherwise.
Questions?
If you have questions about the community, the tiers, or anything else, feel free to ask! We do our best to read everything.
Thanks for being here. Let's build something great together.
— Hootey & Lydia
P.S. – If you're new to firearms or gunsmithing, you're in exactly the right place. We all started somewhere. Welcome to the community.
