Simple goat milk soap recipe
Here’s a simple, reliable goat milk soap recipe you can use at home.
🧼 Simple Goat Milk Soap (Cold Process)
🌿 Ingredients
16 oz olive oil
8 oz coconut oil
6 oz shea butter (or tallow for a more homestead-style bar)
6.5 oz frozen goat milk
4.3 oz lye (sodium hydroxide)
Optional: essential oils (1–2 oz total), dried herbs, or oatmeal
----
🛠️ Tools
Digital scale (very important for accuracy)
Heat-safe containers (no aluminum)
Stick blender
Thermometer (optional but helpful)
Silicone mold
Gloves + safety goggles
----
🧊 Step 1: Prepare the Goat Milk
Freeze your goat milk into ice cubes
This keeps it from scorching when you add the lye
⚠️ Step 2: Wear gloves and goggles-dont breath in the fumes that are created when mixing in next step. Do this outside or in ventilated area. Don't get lye mixture on hands or skin-from this step on throughout the processing.
Begin the process- Mix Lye + Milk (Safety First)
Slowly sprinkle lye into the frozen goat milk
Stir gently as it melts
Keep temperature low (below ~100°F if possible)
It may turn creamy yellow—that’s normal
🔥 Step 3: Melt Oils
Melt coconut oil and shea butter
Add olive oil
Let oils cool to around 100°F
🌀 Step 4: Combine when both mixture and oils are within the 5 degrees of each other's temps @ around 100°f.
Slowly pour lye/milk mixture into oils
Blend with stick blender until “trace” (pudding-like consistency)
🌸 Step 5: Customize
Add essential oils, oats, or herbs
Stir gently
🧱 Step 6: Mold + Set
Pour into mold
Lightly cover (don’t over-insulate—milk soap can overheat)
Let sit 24–48 hours
✂️ Step 7: Cut + Cure
Remove from mold and cut into bars
Cure for 4–6 weeks in a cool, dry place

💡 Tips (From Experience)
Goat milk soap is extra moisturizing because of natural fats and sugars
Keeping temps low helps preserve that creamy color (instead of turning dark)
If it smells a little “ammonia-like” at first—don’t worry, it fades during cure
🌿 Simple Variation Ideas
Oatmeal Honey – add ground oats + a little raw honey
Lavender Calm – lavender essential oil + buds
Tallow Blend – swap shea butter for tallow for a harder, longer-lasting bar
