An altered state of consciousness (ASC), also called an altered state of mind, altered mental status (AMS) or mind alteration, is any condition which is significantly different from a normal waking state
A classification of Altered States of Consciousness is helpful for comparing or differentiating induced ASCs and other variations of consciousness. Various researchers have attempted the classification into a broader framework. A classification with five categories was suggested by Dieter Vaitl to distinguish ASCs according to how they were induced:
- Pathological (Epilepsy, brain damage)
- Pharmacological (psychoactive substances) - see class V
- Physical and physiological (fasting and sex) - class VI and III
- Psychological (music, meditation, hypnosis) - class IV, I and II
- Spontaneous (day-dreaming and near death experience)
Classes I-VI delve into Hermetic teachings on how to apply theory and practice to expand one's consciousness within these realms.
