This is a group for people interested in herbs and herbal medicine with a focus on the Mediterranean basin and Near East. We will talk about the medicinal herbs of this region and its herbal traditions. It is intended that the membership include both interested lay people and professional herbalists. The regional focus, while important, is not absolute. Ancient trade routes meant that many herbs not native to the Mediterranean were commonly available for both culinary and medical use, herbs such as ginger and turmeric. Similarly, cultural exchange along these same routes allowed reciprocal influences to shape the four great medical systems of the Old World: Hippocratic medicine, Unani, Ayurveda, and Chinese medicine. A personal interest of mine is applying the conceptual models of these systems, particularly Chinese medicine, to the therapeutic use of the herbs typical of the region in which I live, the Mediterranean. Discussion is welcome on all of these topics.
