The old voice:
๐ฃYou are stupid for trying. Everyone can see through you. Do not get your hopes up.
It does not arrive like a stranger. It arrives with total certainty, in your own cadence, sounding exactly like judgment, exactly like realism, exactly like the most honest assessment available.
This is precisely why it is so hard to catch. A voice that announced itself as fear would be easy to dismiss. A voice that sounds like you, reasoning calmly, is nearly impossible to argue with โ because you are not used to arguing with yourself.
It is not you. It is a survival strategy that learned, a very long time ago, to speak in your exact voice so that you would obey it without question.
Think about what that voice was actually built to do. Somewhere early, hope was met with disappointment large enough that the nervous system drew a conclusion: wanting something and losing it hurts more than never wanting it at all.
So a guard was installed. One that speaks first, before desire can fully form, talking it down before it becomes real enough to be devastating if it fails. It sounds like protection because it is protection. It was simply built for a child who had no other defense available.
When that voice is believed as fact, it runs the whole life unchallenged. Every risk gets refused before it is taken. Every desire gets quietly diminished before anyone including you notices it was even there. A life gradually shaped entirely around not being hurt again, rather than around what is actually wanted.
When that voice is recognized instead as a state โ as a specific age, speaking from a specific place in the body โ its certainty starts to lose its grip. It stops being instruction. It becomes information.

Next time you hear that voice deliver its certainty, pause before believing it.
๐Ask your body, not your mind: where do I feel this? Place a hand there.
๐Breathe slowly and say quietly, Thank you for trying to protect me. I hear you.
๐Then notice, without forcing anything, whether the certainty softens even slightly once it has been met instead of obeyed.
๐That noticing is the beginning of the grip loosening.
Rather than debating it in the mind, meet that voice in the body.
It was never telling you the truth. It was telling you what once kept you safe.
Let me know ๐have you recognized that voice?
