Nine Years to Freedom

Nine years ago today, I walked away from a marriage of seventeen years and a relationship that had shaped nearly twenty years of my life.

It wasn’t one dramatic moment that changed everything.

It was one choice.

One step.

One decision to stop living from fear and begin living from authorship.

Looking back, I don’t see that day as the end of something.

I see it as the day I finally picked up the pen.

For years I believed I was trapped inside a story that had already been written for me. A story shaped by generations before me, by survival, by expectations, by wounds I didn’t create but somehow inherited.

When we learn something new that changes how we see something we once thought we knew to be absolutely true, we learn that truths can be perspectives, only true from a s certain point of view, and not so much absolute truths.

In this way we can allow for what we knew to be true and what we now see to be also true, too. This is how we cultivate a more global view.

Today we know through epigenetics that our lives are influenced by the experiences of those who came before us. We often find ourselves walking familiar paths long before we understand why they feel so familiar.

And yet…

Maybe the purpose isn’t simply to erase the past.

Maybe each generation is invited to understand it a little more deeply.

To become a little more conscious.

To make one different choice.

To leave the path just a little clearer for those who come after us.

Perhaps what we’re building isn’t perfection.

Perhaps we’re building humanity.

Every time we choose awareness over autopilot…

Curiosity over certainty…

Authenticity over fear…

…we add another stone to a stronger foundation.
