THE 7 OF SWORDS: The symbolism you're missing.
Stop calling this card "the thief."
The 7 of Swords card depicts a Moroccan man running away with an idea. He has brilliant ideas that question or go against the group’s established religious beliefs. A new approach to outdated ideas or a new frame of mind could enlighten his people and encourage progressive change. He aims to inspire, but to no avail. There’s no other option but to escape this oppression. He abandons his people in search of open-minded individuals who will be more receptive of his unconventional views.
The man’s Moroccan Fez hat is a symbol of devotion to his Islamic religion. The Fez hat represents the city of Fez, one of Morocco’s oldest and most historically important cities. The Fez hat is associated with religious symbolism and is often worn during Islamic religious ceremonies and events. The suppression of uncomfortable ideas may be common in religion and politics, but it is not the path to knowledge. This man’s intelligent conceptualizations are a sin to repress. Not being allowed to express himself freely has become suffocating.
The man flees with five swords in his hands. There being 5 identical symbols corresponds to the 5th sefirah called Gevurah. Gevurah, meaning strength, is the commitment to justice, and the discipline required to persist through difficulties. It’s the energy to champion something. If you look closely, you will see how the man’s fingers on his right-hand grip the two swords just as you would an ink pen. This indicates that he plans to share his ideas by writing them down. Two identical objects grouped together correspond to Chokmah, meaning wisdom, symbolizing his desire to share ingenious and enlightening ideas. In his left-hand he carries three swords, which correspond to the 3rd sefirah called Binah, meaning understanding. The left arm coincides with the left pillar energy of receiving.
Therefore, he is receiving deep understanding and feels the need to share his thoughts to improve other people’s lives and perhaps change the world. And lastly, there are two swords standing in the ground to the right of this man. These swords signify that he has become aware of his community’s lack of progress and development. They are happily stuck in their traditional ways and have grown content in their complacency.
The religious group has chosen to settle in the desert, which symbolizes a place where nothing grows, everything remains the same, complacent, and routine. Symbolized by his red shoes, the man is passionately driven by his ideas. He is a free thinker and has an intellectual mind that cannot be suppressed.
This man is wise to write down his ideas. By doing so, he can organize and express his thoughts articulately. Writing is the medium that allows him to channel intuitive concepts, theories, and philosophies. Writing his is escape. As the ideas flow, he tunes into inspiration, which ignites creativity and imagination. Writing down your thoughts is the first step to putting ideas into action.
The yellow background suggests a bright future is ahead of him if he continues to follow his passion, acting as an intuitive channel to manifest innovative ideas. This improves the world and elevates the collective consciousness.
Whenever this card is drawn, it urges you to share your ideas and not repress them. This card also advises to express yourself either through writing or art. For instance, the way the man’s fingers grasp the two swords is how you would hold an ink pen or a paintbrush.
Moreover, with a more practical approach this card could suggest someone will write you either by text message, email, or postage mail.
Sometimes, it’s easier to express your thoughts and feelings when you write them down than it is to confront someone face to face.
