I gave 28 years to one agency. And I am grateful. But I also know this: The agency was not going to build my wealth for me. The pension helps — but it was never designed to make me financially free.
Here's my question for you today: Did anyone in your government career ever sit you down and talk
to you about building income outside of your job? A supervisor, a mentor, a union rep — anyone?
Yes or no — and if yes, what did they say?
I'll go first: Nobody talked to me about income outside of the job or about finances for that matter.
I was a union representative and what we told members was how to read their pay stub; what was the difference between net pay and gross pay. I was in debt my entire working career. Now I know better and do better with my finances.
