“If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat—
and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink:
For you shall heap coals of fire upon his head,
and Yahweh will reward you.”
Old image— burning coals on the head.
Either shame, or heat to melt pride.
Or— get this—
in Egypt, if a worker stole a tool,
they’d make him carry burning coals in a basket on his head—
public confession.
Not to hurt, but to say, “I did wrong—
and I know it.”
So the promise flips:
You do kindness to the enemy—
God gives him the coals.
Let him feel the heat—
not you.
Grace with a match.
No slapping.
Just serving.
And God lights the rest.
