Olá old friends from across the Atlântico!
Olá, bom dia ALEGRIA! Last week the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, flew into Lisbon. It’s the latest chapter in a friendship that goes back to 1791, when Portugal became the first neutral nation to open diplomatic ties with the young United States. And the friendship began in a glass: tradition has it that the Founding Fathers toasted the Declaration of Independence with Madeira. Today’s sheet, Nº 15: Os Estados Unidos, is in the classroom. A language nugget: it’s plural in Portuguese, “os Estados Unidos”, so “the United States are”. On signs and in headlines, look out for the short form EUA. Over to you, American friends: what brought you to Portugal? And everyone else, who’s tried Madeira? Saúde! 🍷

AIMA: the appointment we all remember 🎫
Olá, bom dia ALEGRIA! Yesterday we had an AIMA appointment. Tune in this morning for my review (or watch the replay, later). Whether you came here for the sun, the pastéis or the pace of life, sooner or later every one of us ends up at AIMA, clutching a folder and a senha (queue ticket). Today’s sheet, Nº 13: AIMA, is in the classroom. It has four phrases for the counter, including the one that will save you every time: “Pode repetir, por favor?” (Could you repeat that, please?) Over to you: what’s your AIMA story? The best tip, the longest wait, the kindest staff member? Boa sorte a todos! 🍀
Gardening, Homesteading & Portuguese!
I've always liked the idea of learning practical skills that make everyday life more rewarding. Gardening and homesteading are great examples because you can start small, learn through experience, and gradually become more self-sufficient. I've also been exploring tools that make learning and organizing new projects easier: - YouTube – Find gardening tutorials, composting tips, and beginner homesteading ideas. - Pinterest – Save garden layouts, planting inspiration, and DIY projects. - Notion – Keep a garden journal, track planting dates, and organize seasonal tasks. - Duolingo – Practice Portuguese a little every day and build a consistent learning habit. - Floment AI – Explore AI tools and automation ideas that can help organize personal projects and everyday tasks. I think the best way to learn anything is to stay curious, start with what you have, and improve as you go. For those who garden or practice homesteading, what's one beginner-friendly project you'd recommend starting with?

Criminal facts in Portugal
Because there is crime in Portugal (it's not a paradise...), I'll place some ocasional news about the subject here. Seven people were convicted to prison (7Y9M to 16 years) for a total of 36 robberies. They robbed houses, with old folks inside, and businesses, perpetrated in the districts of Coimbra and Aveiro in early 2022.https://www.jn.pt/3644566357/sete-dos-15-arguidos-do-caso-teia-dourada-condenados-a-prisao/
