Another of Portugal’s greatest and most inspiring stories ever told is the Miracle of the Roses (Milagre das Rosas), featuring Queen Saint Isabel of Portugal.
In the early 14th century, the devout Queen Isabel (wife of King Dinis) was secretly taking bread from the royal kitchens to feed the poor during a famine. One day, as she crossed the palace courtyard with a basket hidden under her cloak, the suspicious king demanded to know what she was carrying.
Fearing punishment, the queen replied calmly: “Roses, my lord.”
When the king pulled back her cloak to expose her 'crime', the bread had miraculously transformed into a basket of fragrant, perfect roses.
Touched by the miracle and her charity, the king never again questioned her generosity.
This beautiful tale of compassion, faith, and divine intervention made Queen Isabel Portugal’s beloved patron saint of the poor and is still celebrated every year on her feast day with rose processions and charity events across the country.
