One of the biggest misconceptions about credit is that paying off a collection automatically removes it from your credit report.
Unfortunately, that's usually not true.
When you pay a collection, it may simply update to "Paid Collection" instead of disappearing. While paying it can sometimes help lenders view your report more favorably, the account can still remain on your credit report for up to 7 years from the original delinquency date.
Here's what you should do before paying a collection:
โ
Verify the debt is accurate. (DISPUTE THEM)
โ
Check the date of first delinquency.
โ
Find out who currently owns the debt.
โ
See if a Pay-for-Delete agreement is available.
โ
Understand how paying it may affect your overall credit goals.
Every credit report is different. The right strategy for one person may not be the best strategy for another.
