The Virtues of Manhood
“But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness” - 1 Timothy 6:11
  1. The purpose of virtues
In the verse mentioned above, we get visual clarity on Paul´s instructions to Timothy, a young pastor and leader in the early Christian Church.
In this passage, Paul is urging Timothy to pursue a godly life that sets an example for others to follow. In particular Paul calls Timothy a “man of God” thus setting a high moral standard for all men.
Paul outlines 6 qualities that define a man of God; also known as the six virtues of manhood. “follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness” - 1 Timothy 6:11.
What is a virtue?
Virtue = Behavior showing high moral standards.
  1. Biblical Virtues of a Christian Man
Virtues start with your relationship to God and expand outwards towards your family, church, country, work, etc…
There are six virtues of manhood:
  • righteousness: #1
  • godliness: #2
  • faith: #3
  • love: #4
  • patience: #5
  • Meekness: 6#
Righteousness: VIRTUE #1
“Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times” - Psalm 106:3
Definition: Righteousness refers to the quality of doing what is right in the eyes of God and following God's standards for life. Righteousness focuses on the moral aspects of one's behavior and actions.
Standard: Be right with God and be fair and just in your dealings with people.
Biblical Example:Joseph in Egypt (Genesis 39-50): Joseph's life exemplifies righteousness. He resisted the advances of Potiphar's wife, maintaining his moral integrity. He interpreted dreams faithfully and sought justice, even when wronged. His righteousness eventually led to him becoming a trusted advisor to Pharaoh.
Godliness: VIRTUE #2
“According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue” - 2 Peter 1:3
Definition: Godliness is about having a deep, respectful, and devoted relationship with God. It's living in a way that shows your faith in God's goodness.
Standard: Godliness starts with a consistent and genuine desire to study God's Word. The deeper your devotion to God the better it will be reflected in your lifestyle. Your actions, reputation and character will be an example to inspire others to grow closer to Christ.
Biblical Example:King David (2 Samuel, Psalms): David is described as a man after God's own heart (1 Samuel 13:14). Despite his imperfections, he displayed a deep, intimate relationship with God through his Psalms, prayers, and dependence on God in both times of triumph and repentance.
Faith: VIRTUE #3
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” - Romans 10:17
Definition: Faith refers to a deep trust in God´s character, authority and promises. Faithfulness comes from total obedience, trust, and submission to God which in turn makes it possible for you to emulate the same level of loyalty to your wife, friends, and family.
Standard: Submission to God = integrity. To be faithful is to be reliable and trustworthy. A man of God is known for his honesty and integrity. Faithful men keep their word and deliver on their promises.
Biblical Example:Abraham (Genesis 22): Abraham's faith was tested when God asked him to sacrifice his son Isaac. Despite the immense challenge, Abraham believed God's promise that Isaac's descendants would be as numerous as the stars. His unwavering faith led to God providing a ram as a substitute sacrifice.
Love: VIRTUE #4
Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things." - 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Definition: Love refers to selfless and sacrificial behavior. It involves actively seeking the well being of others and esteeming others higher than ourselves. It is the cornerstone of all virtues, as it shapes the way you treat family, neighbors, church members, etc.
Standard:To behave in a selfless and sacrificial manner while upholding truth. Putting the needs and well-being of others first.
Biblical Example:The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37): The parable of the Good Samaritan illustrates selfless love. While others passed by a wounded man, a Samaritan showed compassion, tending to the man's wounds and providing for his care, despite their cultural differences.
Patience: VIRTUE #5
“This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.” - 1 Timothy 1:15-16.
Definition: Patience is the quality of steadfast endurance in the face of provocation and suffering. A man of God must garner a calm and collected attitude, trusting in God, even when things get frustrating or difficult.
Standard: Refrain from emotional reactions. Remain calm during discussion or debate. Renew your thoughts, actions and behavior that foster delayed gratification.
Biblical Example:Job (Book of Job): Job's story demonstrates extraordinary patience. He endured immense suffering, yet he did not curse God or lose faith. His patient endurance in the face of overwhelming adversity is a powerful example.
Meekness: VIRTUE #6
“Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit this earth” - Matthew 5:5
Definition: Meekness is strength under control. It's the ability to exercise authority and power with gentleness.
Standard: To be humble and gentle in how you treat others. To defend your family, community and stand up for the truth at all times.
Biblical Example: Jesus (Throughout the Gospels): Jesus, the ultimate example of meekness, displayed strength under control. He welcomed sinners and called them to repentance, he forgave His enemies, and submitted to the Father's will even in the face of the cross. His humility and gentleness is the greatest example from the scriptures.
