Bumping this post up because David Lynch just died 😭 This might be just my favorite film related meme of all times. What’s yours?
What’s your favorite David’s creation? I grew up with Twin Peaks, so it’s a no brainer. Wild At Heart. And the fact that Blue Velvet brought Roy Orbison back into the limelight… Plus his book Catching the Big Fish has been a staple of my self growth…

Interesting Research on Independent Film
Hi everyone! 👋 I came across some interesting research done a couple of months ago by Keri Putnam, a fellow at Harvard’s Shorenstein Center, and thought this group would appreciate it. It's an "Independent Film Audience and Landscape Study" that looks at the challenges and opportunities for independent film. Feels relevant for documentary filmmakers trying to navigate today’s media landscape! Key points: 1. There’s a big untapped audience for independent films in the U.S. 2. Lack of data is holding filmmakers back—more collaboration is needed. 3. Audiences are craving alternatives to mainstream entertainment. 4. DIY distribution is paving the way for new strategies. 5. Policy changes could help level the playing field. It’s thorough research for anyone in this space, and I think she did a great job sharing the results in an easy-to-digest format! BBC AI Announcement!
Hi All! BBC released some AI use guidelines: "The BBC says that audience demand for AI transparency is driven by four main needs, with audiences telling the pubcaster that they want to be reassured that AI 'is used as an assistive tool, and that creativity and journalistic instinct are preserved'; that audiences should be ‘empowered to evaluate content effectively’; that they be kept informed about AI and what it means for media; and that they be “respected” by being shown how the broadcaster is utilizing AI technology. One of the key points is the distinction between what the BBC labels as two types of disclosure: direct and indirect. Direct disclosure includes things like letting audiences know about the use of AI at the point of consumption, for example by annotating an onscreen image as being AI-generated.” This is a very welcome step - NETFLIX, I am watching you making transparency guidelines on AI too! How are you using AI in your filmmaking?
