There's no better way to officially launch our community than by following Jesus's own prerequisite to His public ministry: confronting The Enemy in the desert and putting him on notice; his days as prince of this fallen world were numbered.
Before Jesus went into the desert to be tempted, Satan was unsure about whether this was the long foretold Messiah; True God and True Man.
By the time Jesus came back to town with a rumbling tummy, all that had been cleared up and the devil was now more afraid than he had ever been.
Lent somewhat fast-forwards past Jesus's ministry and takes us straight to Holy Week and the Sacred Triduum where the Passion, Death and Resurrection fulfill the threat Jesus posed to Satan in the desert three years earlier.
But here is the mind-renewing truth: the fallout of Jesus's dealing emphatically with Satan has implications that the Church today has not done very well to grasp. When we do grasp them, everything changes suddenly.
The thing is we can only call Satan the 'Prince of this World' insofar as we, the people currently living on Earth, have crowned him as such. Of course this includes Christians, because by our fear, apathy, vanity, and pride, we play a role in Satan's coronation.
Jesus said 'ALL authority in Heaven and Earth has been given to me' - not 'will be' -- HAS BEEN. The transfer of power from Kingdom of Darkness to Kingdom of Light has already officially taken place. Satan was Prince from the fall of Adam until the Resurrection of Jesus. Now, it is only by deception and our fear-filled fiat that he maintains any power.
If every Christian woke up tomorrow and behaved like this is the case (and it is) we would see the world turned upside down in a day.
THIS is our bold aim for a Fearless Lent. I hope you can join us.
