A Winter Read for Beach Music Fans
If you’re stuck at home with a fire crackling, there's no better time to settle in with a good book. And if you love beach music, we've got a recommendation.
The Embers: The Bobby Tomlinson Story takes you inside one of Carolina beach music's most enduring bands—and the Grand Strand plays a starring role.
Hard to believe it's been two years since Bill Benners and Skip Crayton asked if I'd like to help with a book on The Embers. I'd been a fan for decades—seen them more times than I can count—so when the opportunity came, I didn't hesitate.
We spent countless hours speaking with Bobby, reviewing recorded interviews, and sorting hundreds of old photographs. Even listened to some rare recordings. And the book was published on Nov. 1, 2024.
Myrtle Beach was mentioned frequently. The Landmark, The Beach Club, and festivals. The songs, the floor show, and Raymond Massey. We even found a short-lived Embers Beach Club some folks had forgotten. Yes, we had a blast.
Myrtle Beach was essential to The Embers' rise. The Grand Strand wasn't just a stop on the circuit—it was a proving ground, and Bobby never forgot it.
If you've read the book, we thank you. If you're looking for a copy, it's available at Amazon or wherever books are sold. Special inscribed copies are available directly from Bobby at 919-602-4526 (leave a message).
Stay warm out there.
