While the city is famous for art and museums, Florence still keeps many medieval traditions alive — and sometimes you witness them unexpectedly, like the parade we saw on 6 December, marching from Palazzo Vecchio toward the Duomo.
Costumed guards, flag bearers, and musicians from the Corteo Storico della Repubblica Fiorentina filled the streets, celebrating the Christmas lights and tree-lighting season. ⚜️🎺🎄
It wasn’t a tourist show — this is a Florentine tradition kept alive by locals, blending centuries-old pageantry with the festive magic of the season. ✨
The costumes are inspired by Florence’s medieval past and the famous ‘Calcio Storico’ traditions, appearing during special events, festivals, and important dates in the city’s calendar.
