True Worth
‘As a jewel of gold in a swine’s snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.’ Proverbs 11:22
This vivid comparison shows the contrast between outward beauty and inward character. Just as a gold ring in a pig’s snout is out of place and meaningless, so is a beautiful woman who lacks wisdom, virtue, and discretion. True beauty is not found in outward appearance but in a heart that fears the Lord and walks in righteousness.
The world often places a high value on physical beauty, but Scripture repeatedly warns that beauty without godly character is worthless. Proverbs 31:30 declares, "Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised." Physical attractiveness fades, but a heart that seeks after God is of eternal worth. A woman without discretion—one who lacks moral judgment, wisdom, or self-control—may be admired for her looks, but her actions will ultimately bring shame and destruction.
Discretion involves wisdom, modesty, and the ability to discern right from wrong. Ecclesiastes 10:1 warns, "Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour." A foolish decision can overshadow all outward beauty and charm, making a person appear as ridiculous as a pig adorned with gold.
This verse serves as a reminder to value inner character above external beauty. It also warns against being deceived by appearances, whether in ourselves or others. True worth is found in a heart that seeks after righteousness, not in fleeting external attractiveness. The real jewel is not in the nose of a pig but in the soul that is adorned with wisdom, discretion, and the fear of the Lord.
