Keeping His Words
‘My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.’ Proverbs 7:1
This verse serves as a reminder to not only hear but also internalize God's wisdom and instruction. The call to "keep" His words implies a diligent guarding of them, much like one would protect something valuable. To "lay up" His commandments suggests storing them in one's heart, where they will influence decision-making and character over time. This is not a passive action; it requires intentional effort to meditate on and cherish God's Word.
This theme of treasuring God's Word is echoed in Psalm 119:11, where it says, "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." Here, hiding God’s Word is a defense against sin. The heart, in scripture, represents the seat of emotions and desires, and by filling it with divine truth, we guard ourselves against the temptations of the world. Proverbs 7:1 instructs us to keep God’s commandments close, not just in moments of worship, but in every aspect of life, as a moral compass and source of wisdom.
In Deuteronomy 6:6, Moses gives a similar command, saying, "And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart." God’s desire is for His commandments to become an integral part of who we are. Just as we naturally remember what is important to us, whether it’s family, goals, or possessions, we are called to make God's Word so central that it is never far from our thoughts and actions. This requires constant reflection and application, making His Word our guide for everyday living.
The practical application of Proverbs 7:1 becomes clear in how we navigate life's decisions. By keeping His words, we are less likely to stray into paths of destruction or moral compromise. Jesus speaks to this in John 14:23, where He says, "If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him." Love for Christ is demonstrated by obedience to His teachings, and this verse promises a profound reward: the indwelling presence of God.
Ultimately, Proverbs 7:1 calls for a relationship with God that is active and personal. It is not merely about following rules but cultivating a deep, transformative connection with His Word. This forms the foundation of spiritual maturity and guides us into greater wisdom, as we allow His commandments to shape our hearts and minds daily.
