Are You Teachable?
‘Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.’ Proverbs 8:33
This verse is a clear call to humility and a willingness to learn. Wisdom begins with the openness to listen and accept correction, guidance, and instruction. It emphasizes that wisdom is not automatic but must be actively sought and embraced. The refusal to hear and follow instruction leads to folly, while acceptance leads to growth and understanding.
In Proverbs 4:13, we find a similar exhortation: "Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life." Instruction is portrayed as life-giving, a treasure that must be held onto with diligence. Wisdom and life are intertwined, and rejecting instruction risks leading us into paths of destruction and regret. To hear instruction is to embrace the discipline and correction necessary for maturity and righteousness.
James 1:22 reinforces this principle: "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves." Wisdom requires not only hearing instruction but applying it. The danger of refusing instruction lies in self-deception, where pride blinds us to the truth and leads us astray. True wisdom is demonstrated through obedience and action, rooted in a heart willing to be taught.
Practically, Proverbs 8:33 challenges us to cultivate a teachable spirit. It invites us to examine our hearts for any resistance to correction or guidance, whether from God’s Word, the Holy Spirit, or wise counsel. This verse reminds us that refusing instruction is often rooted in pride, while accepting it requires humility and trust in God’s wisdom over our own understanding. When we willingly hear and apply instruction, we position ourselves to grow in wisdom, walk in righteousness, and experience the blessings of a life aligned with God’s truth.
