I’m traveling this weekend to see what a friend said, “needs to be seen in person” at Notre Dame.
First off, the culture here is CLEARLY, DISTINCTLY Catholic, through and through. Around the campus are signs that remind everyone of their identity in Christ. Before the game this afternoon the players will gather for Mass alone with their coaches to root their identity in Christ before taking the field. Everything about the campus breathes the faith. It’s rather a refreshing sight.
It reminds me that living the faith takes courage, but it is TRANSFORMATIVE. We live in a world that often shutters the faith behind closed doors, hoping to keep its practice far from prying eyes, but when that happens, it keeps the faithful person locked in. When faith is lived, boldly, without compromise, it GOES OUT and transforms the world around it. Notre Dame campus provides a perfect example of this “faith on display.” They do not take refuge in playing it safe, instead, they let the world find refuge within the auspices of the faith. The whole culture, from the downtown scene to the neighboring towns find their identity in the school — it is the cultural center, here, and that culture is unabashedly Catholic (at least for this observer.)
If we want to change the culture around us we must 1.) Live in the world and 2) Transform it by living our faith boldly, without compromise, without discouragement, and without fear!
