How many times a day do you say "sorry"?
Over the past week, I've noticed the word "sorry" being said when the person saying it didn't do anything to apologize for. For example, a friend said it when I responded "driving" to a text. Another friend said it when she didn't have the wine I preferred in her home bar. Another person said it to me when she found out I no longer collect the type of rare plant she was gifting me (that I was so grateful to receive!).
I will coach women who say it unnecessarily (and that was me in my 20's!) to first understand that there is power in that word. To say it excessively and when there is nothing to be sorry about, gives away your power. If it's just a habit, I'll ask them to try and change "sorry" to "I apologize". Often, the more intentional and serious version will get folks to see how silly that response is.
Now, I'm more sensitive than most about that word, especially coming out of the mouths of women, who have no influence or control over the proceeding even that made them apologize. It literally drives me crazy! Women: stop giving away your power. Stand in your decisions, actions, and even mistakes. Unless you intentionally did something to hurt someone, or are sympathizing with a loss, "sorry" doesn't belong.
